 Prices
« Thread Started on Mar 17, 2010, 9:28pm »

I've been thinking about trying to sell some animals but the pricing I continue to see on Craigslist etc. is poor. Registered cows for $4 - 600. 1 + yr old steer $300? 2 1/2yr old bull $400 Are people still just trying to get out with whatever they can get? Or am I just seeing the lower quality animals? I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

I don't know, maybe the market is just flooded in that area, or they could be "no so good" animals. I'd like to find a couple of yearlings for $300.00, but that may be a little too far to drive for one.

There are lots of variables when it comes to pricing of animals, even within the state of Texas. Way more than I care to put in writing, if you like give me a call and I'll to the best I can to explain.

The poor pricing that you've seen on Craigslist is from people that just want to dump their animals and that are willing to take "sale barn" prices for their Dexters to save themselves a trip to the sale barn. They may have bought their animals at a sale barn, so their investment is very little and they haven't put anything into these animals. Beware -- buying a dirt cheap animal can cost you big time if that animal brings a disease into your herd, fails to breed, fails to calve, or causes injury. You will get no support after the sale from that seller and you will be stuck with dealing with that animal, whatever that brings.

A reputable breeder/owner can provide you with references (both vet and other customers), support after the sale, including help in getting your animals bred, and help in selling your animals later on. The registration paperwork will be handled quickly and accurately, you will be assured a healthy animal, and if there is any problem it will be resolved with your best interest in mind. But you will not get these animals dirt cheap -- because it costs money to care for livestock, maintain facilities, purchase high quality breeding stock, and invest the time and effort into running a successful breeding program and providing customer support after the sale.

Don't expect to pay "sale barn" prices for high quality, healthy, properly cared for, and properly registered livestock. Anyone that sells at those prices is "going out of business" and they won't be around for long.

Patti, great post.

I would like to mention that testing animals adds up also, genotyping, color, PHA, Chondro etc.

I had a gentleman call me today that had already spoke with several other people about Dexters. He was informed about chondro but not PHA. I'm getting the feeling people would rather dump their possible PHA animals instead of paying the money to test them. Buyer beware.

Barb,

I noticed the same thing. Ever since the word got out about PHA, so many of the Dexters offered for sale are from 'at-risk' lines. Many of those have not been tested. Like you said, "Buyer beware".

Yep, and thanks Barb for being the one to inform us on PHA. We had talked with several owners here in TX when we were first researching Dexters, none of them ever mentioned PHA. Barb was the one who told us about it and that spurred our own research.

I am new to the Dexters and Barb is the one that told me about the PHA. I was talking to people in Colorado and Arizona and no one mentioned it to me. Of course when I brought it up they had not tested their cows.

Thanks Kimberly & Wilda.

I try and explain all aspects of the breed and the breeders, as I'm sure most of you do.
When it comes to genetic info I try and explain the best that I can, then send them to the ADCA website to read and make the decisions they want to make. It is a lot to take in and understand fully at first. With the ADCA website it is a place they can go anytime they want to and reread the info.

I agree with pretty much all the comments here. Prices vary considerably based on a number of factors. We have genetically tested every one of our cows for pha and some for chondro and some for color types. If we sell a "bred" cow it is based on a blood lab test. We rank every one of our cows on a "halter broken" scale. In general our cows are priced based on how much "time" we have put into them. A "show-ready" heifer has a lot more time invested than a bred cow that is rarely handled - our prices reflect that.

A good breeder tries to make sure every customer is happy. We have only had one situation where a new owner got a dexter home and realized they were not ready for a cow and were unhappy with their decision after a few days. We bought the heifer back the next week.

there are many people in west Texas that sell quality animals that they list on craigslist houston , and they get there asking price ,usually posted above or below a 250.00 dexter ...
its all about the pedigree , it would be hard for me to sell a cull for 300 due to the fact that they bring more than that packed and wrapped .
i have a list of people looking for animals so drop me a line when you get time and let me know what you have for sale.
I might be looking for a few heifers , to start another herd at our west Texas ranch

Barb I have my place in east Texas and my Dad has a ranch just outside of Bandera , Im getting ready to start hauling a few bred cows out that way so i can start another herd to try to speed up the process of getting the animals i want faster (using a bull at each place then crossing the offspring), I only held one heifer back this year and culled 4 so at this rate im not doing very well , i guess im too picky lol but you know how it is......you want what you want lol
