Hello and my name is Linda. I live in central Texas and I am doing some research on dexters to see if they would fit in to my "wants and needs " category. I have read most all there is to read on this forum and would like to know if there is any other place to go and read hands-on experience from owners. I have raised goats for many years but have little experience with cattle. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.
Thanks a bunch, Linda

I am no expert but have had cattle for many years, goats and sheep for several years. I find that the Dexters are such an easier breed of cattle to handle, tame and care for that, if you like cattle you will love Dexters. They are also much easier to care for than sheep or goats, but that is just my opinion. Careful as many will tell you they are additive.

HI Linda, My best advice is find someone in that is close to you and go visit their ranch. See the cattle hands on. If you can visit a couple of places. I am also in central TX and would be more than happy to talk to you/have you come see our small herd. We are just getting started, but we have fallen in love with these guys. We researched and read everything we could get our hands on, but it wasn't until I started visiting other ranches that had Dexters that I knew for sure this was for us. Shoot my a PM if you want to talk or would like to know where some places are around this area.

First of all I would like to welcome you and all the others that have recently joined this great forum. I agree with Kimberly, visit as many farms/ranches as possible, talk with lots of folks. There are many things to consider. I think the best advice I could give you is try not to settle for anything less than what you want. Texas, if I remember correctly has the largest number of breeders than any other state. You are welcome to PM me or come out for a visit. Have fun doing it, I'm sure you'll love the Dexters.

The previous advisors are right on! Visit, visit, visit.
You can read all you want, but there's no substitute for meeting the cattle face-to-face. If you don't feel comfortable with them, then at least you found out before you spent your money and became the caretaker of a Dexter you didn't like.
I predict you'll fall in love with them. Barring the rare individual Dexter, they're the most gentle breed alive.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I can hardly wait to get my hands on some dexters. I will be contacting some breeders in central Texas for some hands on experience with these adorable little cows.
Thanks, Linda

Determine what your long-term goal and objective is. Visit farms and interact with the dexters - they are a great breed. Make your decisions and purchase(s) based on what you ultimately hope to accomplish with the cows. If you do your homework, you will be very happy with dexters!

What Barbara said, determine what you want, before you start buying. I just bought cows, and then over the years, I've changed my path a couple of times. Go visit some of the ranches close to you, you'll find our breeders to be as nice as the breed.:) P.J.
