Sorry, Gale! Weaning is almost done, Macy is drying up. She was in heat last night again, her cycle is 20 days, but I'll hold off on rebreeding her till November, per John Potter's advice. In a few days Pretzelle will go back to the cow pasture and Macy will concentrate on growing her own body for a change.

Very interesting to see all the udders, thanks! I have a Jersey and her jersey-dex heifer born in July. I've wanted Dexters for several years, but after so many years of raising dairy goats, I'm particular about udders and would also like higher production, so haven't found any Dexter cows I liked, in this area anyway.
As I also have goats, I have plenty of milk for butter and cheesemaking and for feeding pigs, chickens, and deacon calves. Right now my Jersey is feeding both her jersey-dex calf and a huge holstein calf, plus gives me 1 1/2 gallons for my morning milking when they're held up overnight; when they're weaned, I'll buy another deacon calf to keep up the OAD milking. I would love to have enough milk for fertilizing pastures some day.
I'd really rather have two good milky Dexters than one large Jersey, though...

lakeportfarms ~ Thank you very much. The plan is to milk her. She is so sweet and gentle. We have been working with her and she is really good about letting us touch her udder. So we shall see. She is A1/A2. She is bred to an A/2 A2 bull. Ultrasound says she is carrying a heifer. We are hoping for A2/A2~ homozygous polled heifer...Oh and the calf will also be dark red.

I thought I would toss River's udder in here, too. She's a shortie, very sweet. First freshening. We milked half a gallon, while calf sharing, earlier in the year. Her dam was quite milky. We milked out 2 gallons a day for a while and let her calf have the rest. We would have kept her but we began milking her at 7years old and she wasn't use to being handled. When she nearly broke my arm I called it quits . I expect River to produce a lot more milk in her second and definitely third lactation. We haven't pushed her very hard, though. She's waiting for her forever home.

I was out checking out the cattle today. Decided to share a picture of this udder. This is Shamrock Reba. She is 9 years old and has her 8th calf. She wasn't cooperating very much, but this shows her fore udder pretty well.

Tell her "modest is hottest" only refers to people and that she is a cow and she should strut her stuff.

Ok, this is not for those with weak constitutions . This is SSR Miss Molly B, 2nd lactation. She is the cow I wrote about in the "Udder Issue" thread. This was 4 days after her tiny little heifer was born. I had to help this time. In the 2nd page of this thread, cddexter said a bad udder can be fixed in one generation if the right bull is used. I apologize that that's not a direct quote. We kept Molly's 1st daughter from 2012, Miss Elizabeth, and this is her 1st lactation. And with her bull calf Rodeo This is a definitely improved udder IMO, and just with an average, but sound sire. This year Molly had Goliath, and I was very intentional in getting him on her front teats right from the start. We haven't had any problems with him keeping her down, and I've not had to help. I don't think I'll breed her this year. Though I love her temperament and she's an easy keeper, I couldn't in good conscience sell heifers out of her as breed stock without seeing them at least well into their pregnancies. I could never sell a bull out of her which SUCKS...because Goliath is really looking nice. But he will also taste nice

Joel, what a dramatic difference from Molly to Elizabeth, as cddexter said, in one generation. Thank you for sharing those photos.

Hello Genebo?
I am going back to 2011 here when you posted a pic of Tessie, I've only just seen it but it reminds me of a cow I know, do you know her breeding?
