Just got a 2 yr old heifer in calf and a 1 yr old Steer. We have good quality post n rail and no 8 wire around boundary and a secure gate. Got the cows last night and heifer is where we put her, steer has been out 5-7 times straight under single strand hot tape. I have added another strand and lowered them both and he just looks at me, pushed through it and then stands just outside. Pain in the rear as I cannot get my car in and out the gate as I am afraid of cow getting out. Any suggestions in the meantime until OH gets back from out of town in a week? On the flip side cows are very friendly!

hagabel, I'm not quite sure what he's getting out of. Is he getting under the board rail and out of the perimeter fence or is he getting out of a hot wire pasture inside? Do you have a fence tester to test the hot wire and be sure it has a sufficient charge? What kind of charger are you using? When we used a Tractor Supply solar charger, our calves used to go under. I learned from a fence supplier the charge was not strong enough to shock them through their thick coats. We bought a solar charger from Premier Fence, and that did the trick. Do you have sufficient grounding? We found that you need three ground poles; it really makes a difference in the charge you get. Sometimes you need to pour water on the ground to get the ground poles in far enough to work.
