One other thought. With her weight she is probably not cycling regularly or maybe not even at all right now. As her weight drops and her condition improves keep track of her cycles, once she has several in a row that are regular than bring her to the bull...It is just going to take some time, I would guess 6 months or so to get her in breeding condition, and not cause her any undue grief..

too fast weight loss isn't healthy...even for us. Exercise could be the key here, and it sounds like you have everything covered. I agree with dry hay, especially if you can find some low protein stuff. Alfalfa is going to up the protein content, even if first cut. I'd also be careful about liver damage. The butcher here says when he gets 4H calves in for slaughter, he often has to throw the liver away because it's abcessed (too much grain). When I hired a pro to help me get ready for showing at the calgary stampede, he fed a lot of grain to get the animals in 'show condition'. Six years later, a 20-year-old cow who'd been one of the show string that year still had abcesses. It might be a good idea to check solutions with your vet. We can give you all the advice you want (and then some ), but nothing beats info from someone who's actually trained in this stuff, and understands the cow's chemical needs. He'll also be familiar with the feeding and conditions in your specific area. imo, of course. cheers, c.

Good idea Carole, he is coming up the next day or so to help do some other things (he is also a good friend, and fellow Dexter breeder so I lucked out!). I honestly think she was in heat the day I got her....she was stringing a little, urinating frequently and her vulva seemed a little pink. BUT, I had just had steers on the trailer the day before, and she was excited to be around my barn. So, I did write down date and signs, we will see in a few weeks. Here's hoping.

6 weeks have gone by......she is slimming down for sure. She is just on hay and an occasional pc. of carrot. Lot's of walking and up and down hills. I weight taped her the other day and she was in the 1000 lb range now. So, she is getting there! Still has her big fat hump and her thunder thighs. LOL

she stands tied like a pro.....wont even wiggle. If you leave her tied for more than 10 min, she will start chewing her cud. She must have had some good training when she was a teen-she remembers it well.
