Oh wow Susan, she has calved. Congratulations on a heifer, and a Hedgehog III daughter to boot. How wonderful. I love her name, is she polled? Looks like you have a new milk cow in the making.
regards Louise

Kim Newswanger named her when she AI'd Ebony (if it was a heifer); I can't take credit for her name, but I think it's brilliant. . She's sold to them as a condition of us being able to buy Ebony. And yes, Ebony will be our new A2 milk cow. Spring has indeed sprung!

When I opened this page I saw the calf before I read the text. My immediate reaction was "Hedgehog face", then Hmmm? I wonder if mum is a poll. Look out Louise, we could both be off track, but she doesn't appear to have bud curls, does she. We have two new autumn Wedgwood babies so far, they don't fall far from the tree!! Margaret

I don't know my Dexters well enough to recognize a Hedgehog face, just a cute one! Yes, Ebony is polled. I took a whole bunch of measurements and weighed her (40 lbs. at 10 hours, so who knows what she was at birth), but I totally forgot to feel her head for horn buds or cone-head. Sorry, my bad, Marg had twins, not Margaret! Edited to correct my goof.

She looks great Susan! Our bulls dam was sired by Hedgehog 3, and is a really nice cow, IMO of course. Congratulations on her. I'm going crazy here waiting on 3 more, very exciting!

Hi Margaret, that was what I was thinking, and she has that rounded skull look. The hair does still look a little wet, which may give the look of the slicked down hair.
Hi Susan, what we are talking about, is that horned calves have little bud curls of hair, which kind of stick up a little, the hair really needs to be dry though to see it. Whereas a polls hair is slicked down flat, and the skull in a newborn looks rounded. A horned calf has more of a flat skull across the top. Does that make sense? I'm not describing it very well.
With some heifers you can't feel the horn buds at all until they are a few weeks old. Sometimes you have to clip the hair off to see if there is a little area that is only sparsely haired, almost bald. Bull calves are usually different, their buds can be felt when first born. This is why in heifers I go more on their skull shape and the hair curls.
Yes, and I do have to agree with you, it is a cute face LOL
regards Louise
