Lil'' Miss gave us a heifer sometime last night, woke up and saw her out back. It always makes it easier to just wake up to them! I'm wondering about her umbilical, I've never seen one so big and fleshy looking. I swear it looked like a lazy bull when I first saw her. She had definitely nursed by this time and as you can see in the pic, she's pooping like a champ. Miss had no sign of any afterbirth or anything hanging out of her at all. Any thoughts? I'm sure it's probably something I just haven't seen.

Hi Joel
It all looks good to me, I've seen them a lot bigger than that and in regard to afterbirth mum may have eaten it, it's quite normal for that to happen.
Regards
Ian

Hi Joel,
I can't really tell from the photo, it's a bit blurry. she looks healthy enough though. I would grab her and check it out. Make sure it is all just soft and skin. Check to make sure that there isn't any hernia there, use your fingers to palpate, you can follow up the cord and up the outside of her skin, you will feel the umbilicus, it feels a bit like a soft finger , it should disappear neatly into her abdomen. If you can feel anything bulging out up near where her abdomen is, it could be a hernia. If there is, it will need to be seen to by a vet.
There are variations in what is normal looking. You may be worrying about nothing.
Congratulations on getting a heifer.

Thanks for the replies, and sorry about the quality of the pics. I do everything on the iPhone, and can't tell how it looks on the big screen. I did feel things last night Louise, and it disappeared as you said. Thanks for that. It just really looked different than previous calf's chords did, though I've only seen a dozen or so. I took this last night of her and mom, she's doing just fine. youtu.be/lK0xTwHgJAAWe were blessed to wake up to another heifer out of Zella this morning, so we are 2 bulls & 2 heifers for the year, with 1 to go. Love spring!

May I add in addition to Louise, make sure you put iodine on it after you have handled it...Be sure to wash your hands first also....It is really hard to tell from the picture, but if it's just the fleshy part we can see, it looks OK to me....Hope this helps....Donna J
