Welcome, Susan! Obsessed is a good word--they tend to do that to you, don't they?

Good morning, everyone. My name is Susan and I am new to the forum, and fairly new to Dexter cows. I bought my first dexter cow (a bull calf) in 2012, before I even had a fence put up on my property. He lived in a neighbor's pasture while my husband got motivated. That same year, I bought a 6 month old heifer and a bred heifer. We finished our fence, and I had a jump-start on my herd. These were all black, de-horned cows, though. The more I researched and learned about dexters, the more I decided that I preferred the red, polled cows. So, with the help of a wonderful lady on this forum, I bought a red bull calf and 3 red heifers. I couldn't be more pleased. I now have 2 very small "herds".....my pretty red cows, for breeding, showing, selling, etc. And my pretty black cows, for pets, eating, loving, etc. I have had many hobbies over the years, but getting to know dexters, and having the opportunity to raise them, has truly been a blessing. I am totally obsessed with these sweet cows! Well, thanks for letting me introduce myself. I have tons of questions, and look forward to getting to know more people through this forum! Susan Hi Susan, I too started with the black Dexters, and now I am catching the red Dexter fever. I love my black and dun Dexters, it's fun to have all three colors!

Welcome to all you new comers, mrsssrdex, mare Susan and Christine...Did I get all of you?...Can't wait to read all your experiences with your new Dexters....We have only been raising Dexters for six years and I would not have any other breed...They are such delightful critters, I just love ours....I was just out feeding and playing with our last baby born....She is only about 6 days old....I have been kinda concerned because I have not seen any signs of her yellow poop anywhere and I have been checking everyday...Well, I don't have to wonder anymore!...I was trying to see if my smallest halter would fit her and she crapped all over my leg....More yellow crap than I have ever seen come from one this tiny...I think she crapped half her weight!...So she's healthy!...I figured she must be OK , she has been racing around the pen attacking her mom....She is a little devil.... So some advice to you newbies, DON'T hold your leg at the back of a calf when your trying halters on!...( Like I was doing!)....Have fun everyone with your Dexter, I sure do....And again, welcome...dexterlady

Good Morning! Another sunny day in Florida . Saturday seems to be slow today. Dexterlady, Funny you talked about the yellow poop. It's been almost 7 years now and I'm still checking out poop with my cows. Since they don't talk English the poop say a lot. Bring's back memory's of my first time with that. It was Sara-lu's first calf. I didn't know about that yellow poop. I was out feeding the herd of 2 cows and 1 calf then. LOL Stewie was curled up sleeping and he had this poop all over his hind area, I panic of course, I ran into the house got a pail of warm water and a rag came back out and washed him off. Then back into the house to call my friend Cheyenne, they have been around cows their whole life. I was very still new to this. But she told me that's normal. Petty scary when you don't know what to look for. And to this day I check the poop time to time. I found out just last week that I got a bad mix of hay. That's one place I won't go back to. Now that I have a little more sense and believe me I think a will always be learning. All of them got the run's . And the only thing different was I went some place else to buy hay. Thank God I found another place closer to home and their hay was fine. So poop is a good thing to keep your eye on. I know the Dexter's are throwing me for a loop. So much more to learn. The pha has me a little scared. But I guess with the more I read and the more I ask question I'll learn to understand that. Just when I thought I had the hang of cows. LOL Well I better get moving around here. Everyone have a Great Day ! Mare P.S I guess I should move these stories to the other spot. On the(everything else.) LOL

Isn't it funny how much poop can say!!!! Who knew that poop had a life of it's own! And we complain about our lives. Maybe that's how the saying got started. Crap, I just had a bad day, Or ***** happens, and so on and so on. But here on this funny farm Poop is the word. I couldn't live without, Shoot, I even need it for raising the garden. Beside it telling me how the girls are doing and feeling.!!!! Hope everyone is having a great day!!!!! Mare

Hi Christina
I'm farming Dexters commercially here in Charleville, Co Cork. My herd name is "Gibbingsgrove". I've had the Dexters for about 3 years and will be putting 18 pedigree females to the bull this year, including 5 of our own breeding. I also keep a herd of non-pedigree Herefords, and a small flock of non-pedigree Texel sheep.
I am a Full-Symbol Organic producer. I sell frozen beef and lamb directly to domestic customers in Ireland.
Regards Conor

We are always watching poop on the farm. Lol Poop is not the only word you'll be discussing...there's always a conversation going on about the bull's testicles or the udder confirmation or if there was any goo or mucus showing around the time the cow is about to birth! I can't tell you how many times I crack up because my husband is talking bull testicles with someone here on the forum and it's even funnier because it's usually a woman. Lol!!! It's really funny to look back at some of the conversations. Never a dull moment living with and loving these Dexters!

Then there are the animated conversations about semen that take place at grocery store checkouts when you run into another cow person...

With any luck, Marion, the other shoppers think you're talking about sailors.
