I was wondering if anyone sprays a liquid fertilizer on their pastures.

Hi Ladena
Yes I use a mixture of 20lt liquid seaweed and 20lt liquid fish in 400lt of water. One tank full does approx 5 acres. I put it on with a spray unit with extra large nozzles because both the fish and seaweed have small lumps in them. I apply twice a year in spring and autumn and I am happy with the results.

Thanks, Ian! I started out using a fish/seaweed mix but it was messy and the smell was not good, lol. One morning after spraying I had about 2 dozen vultures circling the property by the time I finished. I switched to Medina Hasta Gro which is a 6-12-6 for a while and this year they came out with a Lawn version which is 12-4-8. The downside is that both are urea based. After I use this up I think I will try the fish/seaweed again.

Boy I'm glad someone has sprayed their pasture. Do you spray with cattle on them or do you put them in another field while you spray??? And does it hurt the cattle or do they turn their nose up on it because of the fish smell???

Mare, we rotational graze so after I move cows from a pasture I go in and drag, spray and mow if needed. It's at least a week before they go back on that same pasture but sometimes more like 2 or 3.

Ian, have you tried Nutrasoil? (I think that is how it is spelt)? I did a bit of reading a few years ago about it, and it looks good. I've just never got around to trying it. For fish spray do you use Charlie Carp?

I tried the montys liquid fert, liquid lime, and liquid carbon and the cows would eat the grass as soon as I sprayed it.. the sales rep told me it had sugar in it.. no wonder they liked it soo good,,, it did not hurt the cows either, they seemed to like it but I figured it was kinda defeating the purpose,,,
we used the liquid applications on corn and soybeans and never had any success there was never no yield differences that was ever seen, so now we stay with a broadcast application in the spring cause it still works best..

we broadcast chemical fertilizer in the spring, usually its 10-10-10 made with urea and pelitized lime., but u can do a soil test for pasture grass and it will tell u what u need to apply. the liquid applications has big sell n points and talks a wonderfull gain, but from a expeiranced user we just never seen a enough yields to justify the cost. Sorder like sell n cool-aid cause it taste better than water but its just colored water but cost more Bill

yes I had the pasture tested and the Ag.Agent said to use 20-10-10 but also said don't let the cows eat it? I need something to just boost what I have. It's been 7 years since the last time we fertilized it. Beside just spreading the poop with the mower so it breakes up and goes into the ground. I only have 12 chickens and they miss a lot of poop piles with 3 acres. LOL

yea, 7 years is a stretch on your fert. we fert. every spring and by do n it yearly it taks a lot less per acre if u go a spell it just requires bout the same amount but all at 1 time. that only benifecial if u no fert prices r go n to b lower next yr or when ever, but in this world wait n usually just cost more. if u buy the fert in the fall u can lock the price in for the spring application and that can save u and save u from a price surge in the spring when the demand is high, but on 3 ac u would never require a lot of fert maybe 5-6 hundred pounds max I say yea I guess in the right conditions a cow could eat enough fert off the ground to effect it and all would say for liability purposes to remove the cows but I just used common cents and spread it in a high chance of rain or when the ground is high in moisture and the fert will melt befor the cows have a chance to eat it. I say its deadly to cows to in large amount or liquid, dad left a bucket of fert in the garden once and it rained the bucket full and a steer drank the water and never took 2 steps from the bucket til he hit the ground,,,, it wuz kinda ob u us what happened... dad never liked that steer anyway cause he would not stay in the field and out of his garden? might hav been a set up too???
