After reading about Olga's positive experience with the California Bander I bought one. We used it today on two young bulls. One 16 month old Chondro free and one almost 13 month old Chondro carrier. We had a similar experience. The banding went well but the little carrier bull acted like a fool for the tetanus vaccine. The older bull did great with both. He's so laid back anyway. I hope the detachment goes as smoothly.

Love the bander... But would never use it in the summer. Watch for fly strike. Just a suggestion.

I checked on the boys this morning and everything looked good. There is no edema which makes me very happy. According to the instructions that is one indicator that I managed to get the bands tight enough. They don't seem to be in pain. One was grazing and the other was looking over the fence at the heifers in the next pasture over.
Sheri, the flies were our main concern also. Fortunately they are not bad this year. I did a topical treatment for flies yesterday, mowed the tops off the grass so it wouldn't be up between their legs and treated the pasture for fire ants. Now we just wait, lol.

We finally had detachment and both boys are doing great. Patrick took 5 weeks and Patriot took 5 weeks and 3 days. I took to heart Sheri's warning about flies and kept a constant eye on them. I look forward to seeing the finished product next year when we process them.
