My family raises nigerian dwarf goats and we are getting a registered dexter cow next month. We are waiting for her to get bred. We are also getting a couple of grade bull calves from the same lady. We are located north central Indiana. We are getting into them for the meat, so the calves not being registered is not that big of deal. We also have a chance to get a couple of grade cows and their bull calves for $1400 a pair. first question is that a good price for grade stock and is it possible to register the cows some how. thank you Kraig

Hello Kraig,
Welcome and good luck with your new Dexter cow! Grade cows are of unknown or unregistered ancestry, and because of this, they are not eligible for registration in any of the North American Dexter Cattle registries. Only animals that have a pedigreed Dexter sire and a pedigreed Dexter dam, and that meet other specific registration requirements, may be registered as Dexter cattle.
Prices for grade animals in your area should be comparable to the sale barn prices in your area for cattle of similar age, weight, and quality.

Welcome, Kraig! I'm sure you're excited about your new cow. On page 29 of the ADCA member list you'll find all the breeder/owners in Indiana, and in your general area, Region 10. If you want registered animals, I would start with them and see if they have any for sale. You could also check on the Sale page of the ADCA website and see if any of the cows for sale are close enough to you. Not every animal is necessarily a candidate for registration or breeding, but many Dexter breeders are breeding for excellence--and eating the others. If the person you bought your cow from has both registered and unregistered animals, perhaps she has made a similar choice.
