Whoo boy... I can already tell this will be a hot button. Think I'll just keep my mouth shut and sit back and watch the show. ;-P

They are really cute, I saw the White Park Dexter cross on another board. They are NOT and NEVER will be part of the ADCA. IMHO. They are part of a miniature cattle registry. You can upgrade a lot of different cattle bred to Dexters. Such as the Lowline registry. I don't think those of us breeding registered Dexters have anything to worry about.

They are not true Dexters I don't think...but to each his own. I could have purchased a group of British Whites 2 yrs ago, but I didn't have the acreage...I have always loved the white with black points. I am also sure they are not inexpensive animals! I am curious as to others opinions!

A number of years ago we crossed our chondro positive Dexter bull with Highlands, and then steadily increased the percentage of Highland with the subsequent breeding of chondro positive Hi/Dex bulls back to 100% Highlands. We now have a chondro short 15/16 Highland bull calf, and are expecting some heifers with the same percentage in a few months, hopefully also chondro positive. People go gaga over them, they look like Highlands but they're really short. We aren't selling any yet until our numbers increase. We also have a 100% very small Highland bull that we can use to breed back to our chondro positive 15/16 Highlands. Oh, and I almost forgot, we get 7 colors with Highlands :-)

I'll stick my neck out . . . I was sorry to see that an elected ADCA regional director started crossing his registered Dexters while he was in office, supposedly "looking for crosses of the Dexter breed that might appeal to the commercial cattle market." (I realize that is not HIS quote, but someone else's about him and thus is hearsay.) IMHO, if I were an elected official, I would try to devote my energies to actually marketing Dexters, rather than to changing the breed, as long as I remained an official. In addition, breeding a cute little cow is not what I would think would appeal to the commercial cattle market, but rather to a niche "pet" market. I have to give credit to the author of the website for selling her crossbred animals when she was elected as a regional director. It is reassuring to see that she is quite open that they are "crossbred" and "upgraded." Again IMHO, it's a shame that they called them "White Dexters." Even "White Park-Dexters" would have been preferable. They are cute, you have to give them that. They look like a tiny version of the French Mirandaise. I couldn't find out how much they sell for, but I bet they aren't given away!

Susan, I know what you are saying, and the name given to them is somewhat misleading (a Dexter except it is white). It seems to capitalize on the Dexter breed. But it is common now to do that. You see all kinds of ads on Craigslist now saying "Dexter heifer", but it's not registered, and there is no way you could ever know for sure that it is a Dexter, rather than a mishmash of breeds with the Dexter name able to obtain the most money for the crossbred grade animal.
We sell both, and frankly a good number of people come out thinking they want a Highland, and then once they've had a chance to look at the Dexters they decide it's a more practical breed for them and they buy a Dexter. We take some of our Highlands to the local fair with our Dexters, and the Highlands especially the young calves) attract the crowds, and at the same time they learn about the Dexters, with many deciding they want the smaller size of the Dexter, even though our Highlands are not really that large.
At the fair, a young man (16-17 or so) whose father was there with their Angus was really helpful when we first arrived, helping Sheril and I carry stuff, unload some of our animals, etc...he just volunteered to do this. I told him he was welcome to take our little 1.5 month old fuzzy Highland bull calf for walks, and assured him he wouldn't regret it. Later in the week, he did just that, and he had a dozen or two girls around him the entire time he was out walking the little bull calf around. He later said he got many phone numbers/Facebook friends out of it.

If you're in a livestock barn that's better than a puppy. ;-)

Sheri, I was just thinking they look like fuzzy puppies, just big ones! You should do a Tom Sawyer, Hans, and CHARGE to let guys and girls walk them! They really are very, very cute! I bet a little 6 week old calf made the girls just melt!
