raeleigh26, I made that suggestion because it was one I had found frequently on KFC (Keeping a Family Cow). Here are two articles, one from the Manitoba government and another much longer and more scientific one, which both mention salt (including sodium bicarb) as a contributing factor for udder edema. You can remove salt blocks or loose salt while still providing a high quality loose mineral so they don't suffer from an imbalance. Some people still use the red "trace mineral" blocks for their cattle, but if you look at the composition, they're mostly salt. So a cow trying to get enough minerals from a block like that can actually get too much sodium and still not have enough trace minerals.
