Hi! We live in eastern Shasta County and are hoping to pick up our first Dexter on Saturday! Excited, but scared to death. We had moved away from Dexters at the advice of a friend and purchased a milking shorthorn cross from, what turned out to be, a nefarious fellow (to be kind). The shorthorn tried her best to kill 2 people, so we are now pretty gunshy. As I'm sure you guys know, the decision to get a family milk/beef cow can be the brunt of a lot of criticism anyway (or is that just my experience?). Anyway, happy to be on here to learn, learn, learn.

Hi, Deann, a double welcome! So sorry you had a bad first experience, and I hope you found out that MS beef tastes good. So glad you didn't give up! Hopefully the person you're buying your Dexter from will be there to mentor you through the adjustment period, but there's always help on here. We love "newbies" and like to see them stay with Dexters, and we were all new once. Sorry you've met with criticism, but hopefully some fresh milk and homegrown beef will change peoples' minds. Our adult kids enter into our late blooming love of Dexters to various degrees. About two years in, one of them asked me how long we thought we would "be able to keep doing this." Sheesh! DH was just turning 60 then, and I'm younger. But she and her husband always want to help feed when they're here, and everybody loves the milk and meat and little calves. I think you'll find that the cute factor will go a long way to changing some peoples' minds! Other people will change their minds when they see their first Dexter and realize it isn't some big, scary, fire-snorting toro! Keep us posted on how things go.

Hi Deann, Welcome, we are a few hours north of you near Portland. We bought our place as a retirement gig, then added Dexters and have never looked back. A lot of our friends doubted we would last long on the farm, but it was something we had to try. Good luck on your journey, you have found a great community here. Dave
