For now I plan to continue to selling my available steers at weaning. However......when I ever get to retire from my "real" job, I hope to expand on my farm possibilities. You guys are my inspiration!

When I look at the ADCA archives and read the ads for Dexters for sale in 1993, and the Dexter breeders then were asking $1,000 for a registered Dexter bull (1993 dollars), then you've got to scratch you head and wonder why the heck people are still asking only $1,000 for a registered Dexter bull in 2015. If Dexter bulls are selling for $1,000 in 2015, the people that are selling them are losing money. Plain and simple.

Thanks Patti, I really appreciate your advice. I already have someone interested in purchasing a half of beef. He will be on pasture all summer, we will go this route and get on my processors schedule for fall. I figured this was the way to go. Cathy Update We do have a sale pending for our bull. He is too nice of an animal to beef.His schedule works with ours too. It's a win, win for both of us.

Glad to read that things are working out to your satisfaction. I really do understand how a person can have a deep attachment to their herd bull and that it would be very difficult to process him for beef, even if it makes more sense to do so financially. As long as you and the buyer feel that it's a win-win deal, then it's a win-win.

Well I am looking at it another way, we have beef in our freezer right now, the sale of beef would be to family (that usually doesn't mean much $) They money we are getting from the sale of our bull we can use to buy our next bull. So that works out good, a like kind exchange for taxes. Our bull has good genetics, throws nice calves, passes on his calm personality and is still young enough for a breeding bull. If he was older he would be beef, no matter how much I like him. We are also going to put a pig in our freezer this fall. Also I can select and keep the heifers I want from next years calving, and they will be unrelated to our new bull. It makes sense to me.
