Surviving U.S. Dexter Registry in the Year 2050

There are 3 primary registry databases where Dexter records are being kept in the US.

Considering the way the world works, usually the strongest survives, and the others eventually die out.

Record-keeping that is too dependent on a single person, or dependent on a small organization with tiny membership will usually die out. What happens when those key people quit or pass on?.....  Those weaker systems will die out.

Using my crystal ball, here's the probability that each of the three primary record keeping systems will be around in the year 2050

ADCA  99.999% chance of being around in 2050... after all, it's been around since the 1950's and is a strong organization.

PDCA   15% chance of being around in 2050  (it's already struggling)

Legacy 5% chance of being around in 2050 (it's too dependent on too few people).

(My own excel spread sheet only has a 1% chance of being around in 2050, it's definitely too dependent on a single individual)

The point is, that we better make certain that the data in the ADCA system is accurate.... that's why it makes sense for ADCA members to vote YES on genotyping female calves starting 2016... it's a good step toward improving accuracy.


PS. NONE of this is meant to denigrate the HARD WORK that others have put into gathering and storing data... and I hope all the valuable data from any systems that eventually die off, are moved into the surviving system which will almost certainly be the ADCA registry.

PPS... I don't think the ADCA is perfect, but I usually go with the organization that is most likely to survive.... and then I can help push that organization to address issues and become even better.

I guess that mindset would also apply to the longevity of Apple, Google, and Facebook whose innovative founders were few in number.

Legacy provided owners with testing prices that were LESS than 50% of what they had been paying through their associations, and forced other labs to reduce testing fees.

A Legacy founder developed the idea for direct owner accounts/testing with UCD-VGL at Legacy contract prices and worked with UCD personnel to implement the new services now being used by hundreds of Dexter owners of all registries.

Legacy offers the first world-wide genotype registry where owners can make a permanent record of their qualified Dexter for minimal cost. ($30.00 US includes genotype, or $5.00 US with existing genotype). The online pedigree database has the only ancestor pedigrees available on the web that pre-date 1940, and thousands of visitors have been using these research tools since the records were made public. 99.999% of small IT start-ups failed and we were left with a tiny few really HUGE ones (like Apple and Google). Some of those small failed start-ups had some really great ideas and did some amazing work and some of their ideas and work eventually was incorporated into the giants. In some cases, the giants simply copied the good ideas of the little guys, and then drove the little guys out of business. I certainly hope that when Legacy goes under (when we all move into old folks homes), that the Legacy data gets incorporated into the ADCA database so Judy's hard and valuable Legacy work is saved for future generations.

We've already seen some of Judy's good Legacy work incorporated into ADCA.... I for one am extremely grateful for the ease of testing with UCD-VGL (genetics testing lab). It's a shame that ADCA isn't 100% UCD-VGL yet, but it's gradually moving in that direction (once again, the big outfits like UCD-VGL will push the little outfits like the Texas lab out of the way).

I'm voting YES on heifer genotyping to help assure that we have even better records that will last for centuries in the ADCA databases.

As of today, 4/28/2015, the ADCA has the following in it's genotype database:

1,422 Dexters have been Sire & Dam Qualified
75 Dexters have been Dam Qualified only
2,511 Dexters have been Sire Qualified only
817 Dexters have only their Genotype on file

Total = 4,825 Dexters in the ADCA registry that have been DNA genotyped, making the ADCA the most extensive genotype database in the United States for Dexter cattle.

You left out a statistic Patti. How many of those are a direct result of Legacy beginning the genotype effort in the Dexter breed? OH! All of them, you say? Fantastic accomplishment Legacy! High-ten ! !

I'd follow that up by asking how many were done at the top lab in the US and one renowned around the world that it took Legacy years to get ADCA to acknowledge while they FORCED owners to test at the ADCA horse lab.

Judy/Legacy, you should get a TON of credit for many good things you have done.... In fact, I'll continue pushing for the ADCA to continue to adopt some of your good ideas and your data. Then we could simply shut the Legacy registry down because it would be redundant.... I'd love to see you get a position like "records historian" or something like that in the ADCA, where you could continue to work to get some of the old records updated in the ADCA registry which will likely be around for centuries to come.
