Hello fellow Dexter fans ~ We are relatively new and definitely small in the Dexter world. We have a cow, Trixie, that had her 3rd freshening in March - a handsome red polled fiesty bull named Thomas Jefferson. Trixie's year old heifer, Cecilia, who is either silly or sassy depending on her mood. Cecilia is a Dexter/Jersey cross and we have a Jersey steer, Sport, who will be going to freezer camp this fall. We hand milk Trixie, separating her from Thomas during the day, milking her in the evening, and then joining the herd back together at night. We have a breeding pair of Gloucester Old Spot pigs, George and Martha Washington - they are a blast! They are pasture raised. We rotate pastures weekly with the pigs following the cows. Then there's the flock of chickens and guineas - both of which seem to be growing daily, 3 cats and the 4 dogs that make sure everything runs smoothly! We are organic at heart and in principal. We love everything about this lifestyle, except maybe not hauling water and breaking ice in the winter... SO, hello all, from NE Tennessee!

Welcome, MameeT! It's obvious we don't have to tell you how much you're going to love Dexters. Always glad to see someone from my general geographic area! I agree, hauling water is NO fun! The first, best farm improvement we did was to have water run from the house to the barn, and over the years we've added other frost-free hydrants. Of course, they aren't always frost-free but they do make life so much simpler! I'm sure as time goes on, you'll figure out the best location to add water sources. That's one advantage to not doing it too soon, you learn what you want. I'm also glad to have another milker join! Hooray for Dexter family cows!

Welcome MameeT, Congrats on your Dexters, and finding this Forum. You are from a State that has lots of other Dexter owners so you are in good company.
Hope you find the forum helpful,
Carol K
