A couple of weeks ago I posted about my temporary handling set up and plans to build something more permanent. Shortly after I received an email from a Keith Mitchell with Arrow Cattlequip Co. I emailed him and asked to be removed from their list (there was no unsubscribe link in the email). This morning I received another email from Mitchell, but this time the entire list of recipients emails was visible, including mine. There must have been a couple of hundred folks listed.
My question is, is anyone else getting these, and does this person have access to our email address from this board, or was it just a coincidence that I got the first email after posting about handling equipment?

You have your email included in your profile, and anyone who joins can access all the member profiles. You can try it and see. To answer your question, no I haven't personally gotten spam from this source. It's very possible he did join and phished for emails. The only way to prevent that from happening is for the membership list to be purged of people who have joined and never posted or who posted fewer than a certain number of posts in the past year or who haven't posted in years. Or you can remove your email from your profile so that it is then only visible to Olga, but I prefer not to remove my email because then I can only be contacted if you sign in and see that I have a PM. Another thought occurred to me. Some time ago a lot of ADCA members were being spammed by some other cattle-related provider, and it had nothing to do with anything they'd posted here. We discussed it here, and I think we finally guessed someone was phishing from the membership list, which is publicly available. That's a bummer because if you don't provide a way to be contacted, you exclude potential buyers. Personally, I hope there's a special corner in hell reserved for spammers and hackers. There was a guy recently who joined when someone gave a link to his product for detecting calving, which was actually a great thing to share. Unfortunately, he was checking his website to see where traffic was coming from, and when he noticed multiple hits from this site, he came on and joined here and put in a plug for his merchandise. (I think, if I remember correctly, it was in your Father's Day gift thread, Dave.) I don't care for people who do that, but then again I don't care for people who join only to post in the Auction Barn, either. I think it's rude and opportunistic, and I would never contact them about buying their cattle. (Sorry, it's one of my pet peeves.) We have an ADCA website with a sales page that has very reasonable rates and good results, and that's where they belong, IMO. Now if you, Dave, post about one of your animals in the Auction Barn, I'll be interested because I know and respect you from your many posts here!

I thought my email might be visible, but wasn't sure. I use my iPad almost all the time now and the Proboards app doesn't show much info on your profile. That said, I like people on this forum to have a way to contact me other than PM because sometimes I don't check for PMs very often. I'll leave it as it is and take my chances. I wonder if Olga can set a minimum number of posts before emails of other members are visible?
As vexing as spam it, it is pretty small in the grand scheme. All I have to do is think about what you have been through in the past few days to gain perspective. Thanks for taking the time to reply Susan, I hope you are doing better.

I am too. I wondered where it came from. That's annoying. I get enough emails I constantly delete.

Yes, I've received several. I just keep reporting them as spam.

It's not a real professional operation...no capability to unsubscribe yourself, and making all the recipients email addresses visible tell me it's some guy running it out of his garage.

I just went to their Facebook page and asked if there was a way to be removed from Keith Mitchell's email list. I didn't name the forum but I told them that he apparently went to a cattle forum that I frequent and got my email along with others. Maybe if enough of us send them a message they will do something.

I got a dreaded "spam" email from someone selling cattle equipment a year ago..... and it turned out to be the most amazing offer to sell me a barely-used custom dexter-sized hoof trimming setup that allows me to quickly and easily and safely trim hooves... I hate spam.... until it's something very cool that I need desperately and it turns out to be AMAZING at an amazing low price .... then I like spam.

Hmmm, maybe I should turn off my spam filter. I might be missing out on a chance to make millions by helping an exiled Nigerian prince recover his inheritance. Or a pick up really cool hoof trimming chute.
