Has anyone ever tried to register female calves intended for the freezer as steers? Would seem to me, as ADCA is reluctant to implement a calving record procedure, that there should be such an option. Only wish it was cheaper to do, and no paper certificate necessary.

Like our steers, I don't bothering registering those intended for beef. I realize this is not the best solution, but Financially it simply doesn't make sense to register beef when all it accomplishes is paying someone else to keep records that I'm already keeping.
And yes, I realize having all offspring recorded in the same place would be handy. But when the majority of dexter owners are not registering their steers already, it's an expense that is not justifiable to me.

Sheri I don't register my steers either. I have nothing to gain about telling phibs about a steers age. I'm perfectly capable of noting their birth dates in my computer, heck I'm sure I could even make up a record of birth for someone if they wanted me to, I always put the DOB on their receipt and have never been questioned about it. I have never had one person in 13 years ask me for either a certificate for the steer, or ask about a birth record of a cow. I totally understand why people do register, each to their own, the nice thing is we have options.

I am not registering steers either, $15 is still too much. I would love to have my cows calving record be accurate, but can't justify the cost.

I agree it would be really nice to see each cows total calving, but not at the cost. I have only had 2 steers so far and have not registered them either. Maybe for $5.00 I would

hollydzie I would for $5.00 too. In the long run the ADCA would be money ahead because I believe more of Dexter Breeders would register their steers.

Are you talking about falsifying records by lying about the sex of the animal? I am not part of a Dexter organizations but have been part of many others. I have been following some of the recent activities of the ADCA. I will someday have a small percentage of my herd registered. I think most of the problems have came from people lying about their animals if they know it or not. PV they way I see it has came around because people never "knew" which bull bred the cow. Animal registrations are notorious for being used for multiple animals. if you are going to have a strong organization in the future follow the rules or get them changed. I don't think it is ethical to lie on paper work just to save $.

Triplec, I am not talking about falsifying records. I was asking about the logistics of registering heifers that are intended for slaughter. It would seem to me that for those who want a public online calving record, for the official proof of a cow's breeding ability, registering non-breeding heifers as steers could be an option. It would, of course, be up to the ADCA to decide if this is legit. However, I am just now catching on that steer registration went up to $15. I am not willing to participate in this service at that price. Even $10 was a bit pricey, but $15 is unreasonable. So the whole issue is moot until fees go down. I will keep my own record since ADCA isn't interested in keeping them for me.

Triplec, I understood what Olga meant. She never said she wanted to falsify records. I think most of us agree the fees should be less so our ADCA registration records are accurate. I also keep my own personal records and will continue to do so.
