Greetings!
I'm so glad to have found this board. I've been lurking on backyardherds forever searching out Dexter people around me, and all of a sudden here y'all are. Currently I'm in the east bay (Concord). I'm looking at properties in several counties north of me (Calaveras, Plumas, Shasta) to buy a house, move the kids and start my dream on at least 5 acres. I've done some basic research and know I want to add Dexters to my life once I'm settled and set up for them.
Is there anybody here who would let me come hang out with them and talk Dexter? I know that sounds pathetic, but I really want a mentor to learn from so I don't start at this adventure and screw it up. I've been around goats, sheep (never owned em', don't want to) and have chickens and three dogs.
Looking forward to learning!

Wow! Too bad you lived so far away, you could come and hang out with us. Living in Texas now, but originally from California. Glad you found the forum and welcome. Barb

Welcome, tressa! I wish you weren't so far away--you'd be very welcome to hang out here! There's a Dexter milking group in CA that's called something like Dexter Dairy Queens (I haven't been able to find their Facebook page), and they get together regularly to learn about things like halter training, moving a wild cow, etc. It's very hands on and sounds really cool. I'll ask my Dexter friend who's involved for some contact info. It's wonderful having a mentor. Even long distance ones like mine are such a blessing. Just to be able to talk to someone on the phone is a huge help! You can learn a lot from blogs, too, by the way. And here!

tressa, We love having people out to talk Dexters, & you can scratch & pet them too! We're, just north of Sacramento. Just pm me your contact info. New babies here in a couple of months as well, those are the ones you want to meet. I can steer you toward others in the area as well who are just as happy to talk Dexters.

tressa, bay area? That was home for me. Chestnut street by the school of art, weekend getaway in Rio del Mar--when it was all open ground and wild strawberries, not the miles of subdivisions it is now. Welcome to Dexterland. I'm a long way away, too, but do get to SF occasionally. Keep us posted on your progress. We're here to help. Cheers, c.

Tressa, there are a lot of transplant Californians in Texas. My neighbors are also from California, they got tired of all the rules and regulations they had to deal with there and moved to Texas. We're located in Spring Branch, Tx. 30 miles north of San Antonio. One of my favorite songs is from Chris Rea called "Texas" www.youtube.com/watch?v=emwPvqYtrH0 If you're in my area please stop by for a visit. Barb

Hi Tressa:
I'm on Vancouver Island in Canada about three hours north of Seattle, so no point in my suggesting you move here. However, even though I'm now a retired Dexter (ex) owner, I'm still available for help if you need it. `Susan and Barb are great sources, though, and despite the politics, the American Dexter Cattle Association has a lot of useful info and a terrific pedigree program.. Keep us posted on your progress. Cheers, Carol Davidson.

Welcome from Florida! I'm new to Dexters as well and have found this board and the people to be invaluable. I have also noticed that the Dexter people I've had the good fortune to contact are some of the kindest folks you'd want to know.
