everyone seems to have gone over to facebook. hard to find threads, inane remarks, same questons repeated over and over because there's no index to find answers to previous same questions, who'd want it?
Let's see some posting here, guys, where there is at least SOME credibility.

I have to agree with you c. At this point in time I'm kind of at a loss of what to talk about except it seems everyone around us is getting rain, but it passes us by. I noticed on FB it seems that a lot of people are posting pictures of their animals, or animals for sale and birth announcements, just a tiny bit of other stuff. The last big conversation was about SP. Go ahead c start a thread up that we can talk about.

I agree! I find the Facebook threads confusing to follow because things get out of order. I love the conversational format of this forum. As you say, cddexter, there's no index or way to find what's been posted on FB. It tends to get lost in cyberspace and has to be repeated over and over. I think some people use it because it's quick and easy, and I can see the appeal of that in an emergency, but it definitely has its limitations. I've also noticed some really crazy advice given out on FB, which I can only hope people don't follow. I have an idea, and I'll start a thread on it, but fair warning, it's going to be humorous. legendrockranch, I'm so sorry the rain has been passing you by. We were terribly dry here, the grass was turning brown, but we got over 5 inches in about a week. (Sorry, I'm not trying to make you feel bad!) It cooled off for a while, but now it's pretty muggy, so of course it feels hotter than it actually is. I was wishing we could send some of the rain out west to help put out those terrible forest fires.

I admit that I am one of the guilty ones. Susan, you are right in that I find it so much quicker to post on Facebook. I have been so busy of late that I can quickly jump onto Facebook on my phone for a minute, write a comment, post a photo etc. I haven't had much time to send photos to my laptop, send them to Tiny pic then log on and post them here. It is purely the time factor. I do read here each day what everyone has to say, I just don't log on. If I could work out a way to post photos quickly on here I would. Right now I am at work and grabbing a few minutes of quiet time playing on my phone, so back to work now I must go.

Talking about your wild fires, did you see where a contingent of Australian rural fire fighters have flown over to help. Apparently they are very experienced in fighting fires in the conditions of your current fires. Hope they all come home safely.

I prefer to avoid much posting on fb pages that are not closed groups. Most of my friends are customers whom I'm sure have no interest in the ins and outs of dexter details. I've requested our region page be changed to Closed but our director adamantly refused. I'm not sure why since closed is not private, anyone can view it. It simply prevents your comments from being posted publicly to all your friends.
So... I refuse to follow the region group and only post on the larger group rarely.

well, you wanted something to talk about? I opened my emails this morning to the following copy from a facebook page, sent to me by another Dexter person. This is worthy of following up on. Believe me.
Shaun Ann LordDexter Cattle Enthusiasts 3 mins · The current Bulletin has an ad placed by the Pattons in California. I knew Wes Patton was allowed back into ADCA membership years ago and has kept a low profile until now. Apparently, one of the masterminds behind the PDCA/ADCA split is in full reinstatement despite being responsible for the major upheaval that nearly destroyed the American Dexter Cattle Association. The group of ring leaders had ALL intent to completely annihilate the Association with a take no prisoners attitude. They almost succeeded. Look where the PDCA is today. Mr Patton owes every American Dexter Cattle Association member an apology. Personally, I don't care that he crept back in, that was awhile ago, there was discussion over that. I know what the forgive and forget gang is going to say. However, that apology for the vicious, well planned attack on the ADCA Board at the time is long overdue.
I agree with Shaun, especially about the 'forgive and forget' gang. If someone came into your home, stayed for dinner, and while there quietly stole something that was priceless to you, and then publically sold it on for profit, would you REALLY invite him back, even years later, just because it had been a long time? Piffle. Don't even get me started on his business ethics. He may be a terrific person, but by my standards, his integrity sucks.

I am not sure if I should reply her or on my other thread. While I know some have concerns about my recent phone conversation, folks its all about the animals NOT the breeder. I desperately need to bring in some different blood lines. It doesn't mean we become palsy walsys. Appreciate your concern, not to worry though. As I mentioned earlier I have had no contact with them since 2004. I know where my alliances are. Barb

Well I find it kind of strange that Shaun should be so angry at Wes when she's friendly with Kathy Smith on the Traditional FB page. Seems strange. By the way those people involved in the take over have no voting rights at all, they can use the registry, but are not trusted with a vote.

huh?
meanwhile, I know there are lots who think it's all old hat and wrong to rake up old business...just thought it might be instructive for those who were't around to be fore-armed.
So what else do ya wanna talk about? I'm all for discussing the way to breed for quality. Those of you who are doing so, any tricks or pointers for those who don't have a clue where to start?
cheers, c.

cddexter - Wes Patton is not on the ADCA Board, or running for regional director, or serving on any ADCA committee - he is just an ADCA member that is having a herd production sale and advertising it in the ADCA Bulletin. Nothing more, nothing less. The over reaction to this is uncalled for. Harboring bitterness and anger at a person for things done 10+ years ago doesn't accomplish anything for anyone. I agree, the lack of a good way to archive and search the FB pages, and the shear size of the group now, results in a lot of repetition. E.g. "What do I need to get started with Dexters? Tell me everything you know in 200 words or less." It seems like the really knowledgable people have tired of answering the same questions over and over, and so now you have the relative newbies chiming in with, in many cases, bad or incomplete information. It's a good place to reach a lot of people if you want to show off your new babies, kind of a brag book for cows.
When I know of a good thread on this board that relates to a current question on the FB page, I have sometimes posted a link over there to make people aware of this board. Not sure how many have taken the bait, but let's keep trying!

Back to the original topic, sometimes I wonder if the reason people don't get involved here is that sometimes things get rather "intense" (for lack of a better word). More than once I've cringed at the way things are put here (you'd probably laugh if you knew how long it's taken me to word this post, for instance), and I've had to step away more times than I can count. Discussion is good and we don't all have to agree, but I believe that keeping things polite will encourage more participation. Dahdo, very good point. I sometimes link good discussions from here and KFC on my blog. That way I know I can go back and find them, and it's also a way to steer people here. There's so much collective knowledge and wisdom to be mined here.
