We just finished vaccinating our herd and I collected hair samples from our cows. I need to get DNA test results on file for our cows in order to register their calves, correct? Also, I have a sample from our bull to send into the 'other' lab because I need both labs on file to renew my AI ad. I think that's right. We have been so busy lately and I'm afraid my membership lapsed. I just renewed it and need to get back in the loop to get the new calves registered. Last question, I'm sending two cows out for AI. I have their tail samples to send in. Do I need anything else special to get ensure their calves are registered? The multiple lab thing has me a bit lost. Thank you to anyone who can answer these questions. I did a search, but there was a lot to muck through. I don't really have an opinion about the new rules, nor do I care about the politics behind it. I just want my calves properly registered and ready for new homes when they're old enough.

Hi, littlecowfl , the best place to be sure you get clear answers is your Regional Director. That would be Lesa Reid. Her contact info is here on the ADCA Regional Director's page. I'm sure others will have the same questions, so you might ask on the Region 8 FB page because the answers would be helpful to others.

It is not REQUIRED that you genotype your mature cows, as Patti pointed out. However, in my opinion, it's a very good idea to do it anyway. Then your calves can be sire & dam qualified, which is something more & more people are looking for. I agree that having two labs is complicating things. Kim

I agree Kim, I am thrilled that ADCA is working toward full parentage verification.

As long as all AI bulls are genotyped at both labs, any cow's owner can easily get their calf PVd, no matter which lab they have their cow at. I believe that's the reason the ADCA has made that requirement--those bulls are much more widely used (and consequently affect more peoples' registrations) than a bull standing stud.
I don't know any statistics, but I would guess that the great majority of ADCA bulls are used to cover their own owners' cows, so of course those people have them genotyped at their preferred lab (where their cows are) and can easily PV their calves.
I agree that even though it's not currently required to genotype your older cows in order to register their calves, it's definitely in your favor to do it. Genotypes for both sire and dam are required to Parentage Verify their calves, and that's what more and more people are looking for.

Thank you all.
I sent in the hairs for the girls, too. They are my broodcows, so that makes sense. Plus, the heifer I'm selling. That should make it easier on her new owners. Just waiting on results so I can get my bull back up on the website.
Gratefully, Alicia

And Alicia, ignore the two lab business. Just deal with UCD--cheaper, easier, better reputation.cheers, c.

If she is offering bull semen for sale on the ADCA website (AI Bull web page), then she is obligated to have the bull(s) genotyped and on file at both of the ADCA approved labs, TAMU and UC-Davis VGL. She will need to have a TAMU Accession Number and a UC-Davis VGL Case Number for the genotype of each AI bull and be ready to provide that information to anyone that needs to parentage test (Sire Qualify) to the bull(s) that she is advertising semen for on the ADCA website.
