I have a cute story to tell about loading a bull....Before I had any of our Dexters, I had two cows that were cross breeds..Brangus/ Maine Anjour/?...Anyway, I borrow a black Angus bull ( he was hugh!)....The owner didn't have a name for him so I called him BB..For black bull!..Real original right!....Well, this bull was here for three months (until someone else wanted to use him)....All while he was here I would go out and feed him by hand and pet him, he would follow me all over...Can you tell I was a real greenhorn, yet?...Well, this bull was so sweet, he just never did anything bad....Now when he was with the girls , I didn't bother him ( must have been instinct)... BB bred the girls and when his owner came to pick him up , he backed his trailer up to our loading gate ....So I called BB to come get some treats...Here he comes lumbering along, came into the first pen where I gave him a treat...Then his owner decides that he will get him loaded from there( another pen to go into , going to the chute) well, he starts yelling at him with all the cowboy phrases...BB goes into the first pen then turns right around and comes back into the second pen where I was......So the guy gets a stick and starts hitting BB on the butt...BB goes back into the first pen again but he was not going down that loading gate for the owner......So I said wait just a minute, I'll get him in your trailer...So I took a little branch , very thin and light, and I tap BB on the butt and all the while I'm telling BB to load up boy....I'll be darned , he went right down that chute and into the trailer....Then I went and gave BB a treat for being a good boy....The owner was dumbfounded....( or mad, I don't know which!LOL) We were out there for 20 minutes trying to load him...So sometimes it really does pay off to be calm and quiet when trying to load bulls....Thanks for listening....Donna
