Ya, but without going back and quoting, the thread goes: yes there should be reporting of these things..someone else says it's not worth the bother..OP says she will report in order to do the right thing.. Hard for a relative newby to know what's right. (or for that matter, to know how easy it is for us 'oldies' to sleuth pedigree records). No names were named. Supposing she did report, thinking it was the right thing to do.. well, nothing would be done with that info anyway. No wonder people go away in disgust, after an initial positive beginning on this board..marion

I took exception to the OP being accused of ruining the reputation of the unnamed. As to the genetic issues (altho' I have observed even some who have been in it for ten years still don't quite get PHA, or the necessity to test)...I'll quote Rumsfield; "There are the things we don't know we don't know". It's not a perfect world. People get into a few animals and often don't start researching their breed until they really start to get into them. Many do not do much on the internet. The learning curve often starts because something bad happens. I bought my first three animals from a long-time Ontario breeder that had a very large herd. A local cattle man came to see them and said "that breed has them dwarfs". I did know that much about the breed but assured him mine weren't, as the seller had repeatedly stressed they didnt have any. However...they did have the herd divided onto two farms. One farm had the "little chunky ones". They sold mostly from the taller herd which it turned out also had some of the larger carriers. They were trying to get the 'little chunky ones' to breed true!! I was lucky as my girls were all non-dwarf, but I could easily have ended up with a problem. Well, that's my rant of the day.

Carol K is correct. We have had Dexter cattle for several years. It is very easy to locate and figure out who someone is on this board. What disapoints me is that as District 11 respresentative this is how you treat other members. We do not know everything there is to know about Dexter Cattle. Sorry to disappoint but it is a fact. Good leadership is respresented by good followers. When you fail to educate other members and you bring them down instead, your leadership style will fail as well as your respresentation for the breed. In my opinion, your failure as a leader creates more damage to the breed than inexperience. My recommendation is to step down or change your style and educate instead of discredit. We have contacted the breeder of the cow we purchased. He is willing to work with us and make improvements. There has been contact with him from the day the incident happened. As for testing, what needs to be understood is that the ADCA is lightly represented in our area. This area is highly represented by PDCA (We are not getting into that debate). Testing is not required or encouraged. It wasn't until the show at Fort Wayne (oops even easier to know who we are) that we learned the value of testing. Unfortunately we had to have a crash course in education. I assure you, we are learning, will continue to learn, and will make necessary changes to our operation to accurately represent the breed.

Maple View Farm is signing off and will take our "3" years of experience and continue to breed "crap".
For those who care about us, you know our intentions.
Good luck
God Bless to those who do and don't love us.

Carol K. comments on this thread have been deleted for hijacking: the value of testing for known genetic defects is not directly related to original author's post. The accusatory tone was an additional concern.

Mvf you are certainly welcome to your opinion, I gave mine and my posts got deleted for being accusatory. Like I said in my post I am sorry for your loss. My questions to you were meant to make you think, and like I also said in my post, i wish you well.
