This cow is making me crazy, I noticed a couple of holes on her back two days ago, thought she's had one of her spells and had fallen into the fence, today she has new ones. The one on her tail was this morning, I saw a tuff of hair, so I pulled on it and a "divet" of meat and hide came out. They are all perfectly round, no sign of grubs or any kind of parasite, not ozing any kind of puss, so has anyone else seen this? (sorry for the bad quality of picts, my camera was shooting blue today) this is the top of her back

Is this the cow that had steroids? I have not had this in a cow, but I had a dog on steroids and her immune system was shot. She had something very similar. With her it would be symmetrical. If she had a lesion/hole on say her ear she would have an identical one on her other ear. Just a thought. Her body may be attacking itself some sort of autoimmune problem. Especially with all the other issue Don't know if that help just MO

I have looked really close at them and I don't see any type of bots or grubbs. It could be some kind of reaction from the steroid, she only had the one dose and that was 3 weeks ago, but, with her, it could be anything. they aren't symetrical, just random, but they are all up high, tail, and top of her back.................let me know if you get anymore ideas.

I would guess grubs. You may not see them, once the are out - they come off the cow. All you would see behind are the holes in the hide.

It's especially telling that all the holes are in the upper region of the cow, where the flies are more likely to congregate and lay eggs.

I've never seen anything like it. Have you checked if any other animals are infected? You would think others would be showing signs if it is insects or some sort of parasite. If she is the only one I would think it might be connected to her health issues lately.

Could they be warts? One of my heifers had some and when they fell off they left a round hole. She out grew the warts and the holes filled in. LizMo

haaha, thanks Gene, I will talk to him tomarrow. I checked the other cows, no holes. I handle this cow every day, isn't warts, I would have seen them. I really don't think it's grubbs, because the hole is perferctly round, a grubb comes out more of a pimple looking thing. I remember the first warble I saw, freaked me out! But, it's darn sure something, I'll let you know what the vet says, I'm gonna take some better pictures tomarrow and show them to him, save me a trip to town with her in tow.

it's the holes that are round, I'm posting some picts of the "divets" that come out. I squeezed on one today and it was full of pus, uggghghghg! I'll let the vet make his conclusion, but, I'm going with the alien thing. I know, this is too weird, you can see the little tuffed of hair, thats what I pull on and this comes out !!

I worked for a vet for 15 years and have never seen anything quite like that . I still think it has something to do with her other issue's and her immune system. One strange question do you have bats where you live? Because the only other time I have seen something kind off like that was from another animals bite. A cat bite can cause a similar reaction/infection when it bites another cat or dog. But I doubt a cat bit her. Thats why I asked about bats. But I have been wrong many times, so I am probably way off. Let us know what you find out... Holly
