Wow :0)
I've done testing through Legacy and was very pleased with the service. The fact that I also saved a nice chunk of change was icing on the cake :0)

Legacy is updating the service application forms and more information will be available on Monday. Watch this thread! I must say that I have strongly preferred the easy and fast processes of UC Davis (and it looks like Texas A&M is working to improve their slower and more clunky processes - we'll see how that goes). The ONLY test that polled breeders are interested in, is a test to determine if a polled animal is heterozygous, or homozygous polled. If UC Davis, indeed has this test ready, it will be a shock because when I recently spoke with them in recent weeks they weren't even close (but perhaps I spoke with someone who was unaware of the latest efforts). If UC Davis/legacy, indeed has a homozygous polled test ready to go, I'll be in line on Monday morning and so will a bunch of other folks.

Kirk,
Fancy that! I will be just as surprised as you. Scientists across the world have been chasing that patent! If UCD had discovered the gene, ( and I am comfortable assuming they have not) it would be splashed across the pages of every cattle publication, blog and forum in the world.
If Cothran couldn't find it when he had access to all the ADCA polled and horned genetics of the Dexter breed with the concentrated genetics, who else would have a better shot? ( Besides Dr. Schultz who has also had many Dexter samples donated to her by owners for her research and has worked on the research for a number of years as well).

While the specific gene for "polled" has not been found, its location is known to be at the top of cattle chromosome 1.
Because the location is known, DNA labs have found ways to test for homozygous polled in several other breeds of cattle, including Herefords, using a marker-like approach.
I don't expect that UC Davis has found the exact polled gene (that would be HUGE news), but I'm hoping that they have a plan to develop a homozygous polled test for ALL dexters, simlar to the (marker-like) approach used in other breeds where homozygous polled testing is already available.
Even if the upcoming announcement is just a baby-step toward homozygous polled testing, I'll be thrilled.

Follow-up information:
The cost of the polled test if ordered alone is $25.00. If ordered with other tests it can be batched for $10.00. Any owner who has ordered a test kit can add this to their order for the batch price. The order HAS to be placed BEFORE the sample arrives at the lab and enters the testing process. *********** The VGL office is working on a formal announcement that will be sent out to all cattle clients in the next day or so. I imagine the info will be posted on the website about the same time. Here is the information that is currently listed in the announcement draft.. (the wording may change slightly, but you'll get the idea) ....
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Polled Test Recently, candidate mutations associated with the polled phenotype in European breeds of cattle were found. There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds, the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Brown Swiss, Dexter, Gelbvieh, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others.

Here is the official UC-Davis info. There have been tests ordered through Legacy, awaiting results. Perhaps an owner will post the results. The information is pretty clear below: Special pricing through Legacy if you order two or more genetic tests. Take advantage of the $10 price when combined! *************************************************************
Polled vs Horned Introduction
From the time when livestock was first domesticated, modifications to the wild types have been selected both for animal husbandry and aesthetic reasons. Unique and large horns define cattle breeds such as Texas Longhorn, Highland Cattle and Ankole Watusi. However, in modern times many cattle are maintained in more crowded conditions such as barns and small fenced pastures where polled phenotypes are more desirable for both beef and dairy breeds.
Recently, candidate mutations associated with polled phenotype in European breeds of cattle were found. There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene.
The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene.
SUBMISSION FORM - Allow 5-10 business days for test results.
Results reported as:
H/H No copies of Polled, animal is horned. Pf/H 1 Copy of Polled-Friesian gene. Animal is polled and at least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pf/Pf 2 copies of Polled-Friesian gene. Animal is polled and all offspring will be polled. Pc/H 1 copy of Polled-Celtic gene. Animal is polled and at least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pc/Pc 2 copies of Polled-Celtic gene. Animal is polled and all offspring will be polled. Pc/Pf 1 copy of Polled-Celtic and 1 copy of Polled-Friesian gene. Animal is polled and all offspring will be polled.

Barb, I received the exact same email from UC Davis today...Can not wait to test my heifer calf that is due to be born in Feb. The mother is hetero, the sire is homo, so I am hoping the calf will be homo....I already know that she will polled, just not sure which hetero or homo...
