Great idea and though not "official" it's probably just as accurate. I'm stumped though about how that would work with a "Dexter" taller than 48"

for the level you might go to an RV store. they make small stick on levels for campers. Where is the correct/ official place to measure? The top of the backbone at the rear?

Good idea Genebo. The night before you posted my daughter & I taped a sewing tape to the house on the patio, & then struggled to keep our bull standing next to it long enough to use a level from hip-to-tape...what a hassle.

I'm not sure if you all know this, but for ADCA members your Regional Director has a measuring stick that you can all borrow any time you need it. They will ship it to you, you are responsible to ship,it back, but it's very light. They also have an ADCA banner that you can borrow for shows that you go to.

I've attempted to measure mine using a steel tape and my shorter carpenter's level. However, my usually love-mummy-do-anything-with cows notice the strange objects and do not cooperate! Even sidling up to the ones who do stay put, then making that distinct steel tape noise sends them packing. I know that the dip at my waist is 40 inches (YESsss even with middle age spread I still have some 'dip')..so I can get it pretty accurate from there. My main problem is that there is no level ground place anywhere. Sigh..accurate measurement is still a work in progress

That would be my problem. My boss cow 17 years old no problem for sure. She is the biggest pet and not scared of anything. But the rest are not going to want that shiny alien thing any where near them.

Brilliant idea! Another great product for measuring is the "Teletape" www.enasco.com/product/C24068NI was amazed at how well this works when a classifier used it on one of my cows.

Hey Gene, I have been working on my level now for a couple of weeks...I am using an adjustable handle like you use for dusting up high...Anyway, I tried to rig an aluminum ruler to it with a screw to hold it in place but, I found that I also need the ruler to go up & down....Like yours does....You gave me an idea for mine so I am going to try to cut out a slot like yours for it to slide up & down....I have calculated mine to 52inches....I hope I never have one that big!LOL..Thanks for the idea.....Dexterlady
