Okay, I really like the chocolate color. Had not really noticed it before. Most were red or black that I had seen. Thanks for the pictures, I finally understand when I have read about the black hairs around the eyes and nose.
I also am now interested in the calf coat color. We expected little black calves and now our first is anything but black. And after reading more, I am beginning to wonder if she will turn black. I guess we can all start to see if carrying red/dun genes is shown in the calf coat.
Gene, I was surprised that Inion was not born black, given she tested pure black. Guess there goes the theory that not black at birth means carrier for other color. Oh well, why I don't have a genetist job :-)

Hi Jennifer thats exactly what we have been wondering too - is the calf coat colour reflective of the calf being a red and / or dun carrier? Maybe more of the dun carrier actually. Maybe that single version of TYRP1 could have a "small" impact of black dilution but only for the calf coat - maybe. And red carriers are more possible to have "red highlights' in their calf coats?!?!?!?!?!?! Its an observation we will be looking for over the next couple of years to "just see". And we will be able to confirm as we TYRP1 and extension test. Will post our findings as they come along.

A mitochondrial thing Genebo? Now thats really interesting when I think about it. Branna, was as black as midnight. She does not carry either red of dun. Aleala is as black as midnight and does not carry red or dun same as Branna Brom is black but he has reddish highlights. He is a red carrier from his father only. Mum carrys only black Now Ashling is a red and dun carrier as is Bailey who is pictured in the original post. But the difference here is Ash who only had red highlights similar to Brom inherited her red gene from her sire and the dun gene from her mother. Her black coat also came from her mother as sire was has a red coat. Bailey the calf pictured in the original post who is soooo light brown in colour, that we still find it amazing. While he also carries red and dun like Ash – Bailey received both red and dun from his mother But would that be enough for the calf coat to vary so much? ? Interestingly possible

This is our cow, April, as a newborn calf. She is black but carries red. And with her half sister, Easter, who also turned out to be black but carries red.

I have 100 things on my "Dexter" list to worry about before I focus on color. Seems we have Black/Dun....no red. All my cattle show lots of brown on their winter coats. A lot depends on the angle they are viewed from.
Little Burp was brown for 4 months.....brown black for 4 months...and black as coal this spring.

I have 100 things on my "Dexter" list to worry about before I focus on color. Oh Gorignak we all have the same list but gees it is fun to add this to the list too Adds a little light-hearted, fuzzy warm feelings to think we may be able to second-guess the genetics. Come on, you do it too Lovely photos by the way.
