I have a dun, that bred to a red threw a black calf. I have a feeling she doesn't have the red gene. I really like her, and the black Dexters too. But now I am very curious.

Hold onto your hat...
the dun cow has the following possibilities:
Black x Black and brown x brown Black x recessive red and brown x brown Black x Wild red and brown x brown
the red bull has the following possibilities:
recessive red x recessive red and black x brown recessive red x Wild red and black x brown Wild red x Wild red and black x brown
the calf could be either of the following possibilities:
Black x recessive red and black x brown Black x Wild red and black x brown
Cow must have at least one Black gene and two brown to be dun Bull must have two red genes to be red, and only one brown gene or the calf wouldn't have been black
Simple, huh?
cheers, c.
ps: the 'black' at the brown locus isn't the same 'black' as at the main color locus. Just to confuse you...

Pulled and ready to send on my three cows. I will post results when I get them. Is Davis faster to use? Plus they keep your sample on file, is that correct?

So does A&M. It just depends on who you like & perhaps where your calf's sire is genotyped. I just switched ours to UCD because we only had a few & I decided I preferred UCD.

I have used both labs and I prefer UCD. They are pretty quick and very helpful if you need to call for any reason.

Or you could not worry about colour testing at all, because after all, once their pyjamas are off they are all just red underneath anyways. LOL
Sorry guys just my warped sense of humour.

but it's fun to find out what they carry. And sometimes it's not so fun, when you don't get what you were hoping for. Barb

Pinevalley, I too think its fun to see what you get. I like all the colors so I am not ever disappointed. I do have favorites though and that would be black! Louise, you have a dark sense of humor just like mine LOL.... Holly

I like the black too, my favorite little Dexter cow Daisy is black with a cute white udder. Personality is more important than color. I had a beautiful red, brindle cross bred cow, she was not the nicest or brightest cow. If you were in her way she would run you over instead of going around. She is the one the horses chased when she was a calf.

I think figuring out the color genetics is great. I have decided to color test our bull too. Curious on the type of red he carries.
