Fran, it will usually take a little time for the new calf to hit all the quarters, but if you do decide to milk those two later today to ease some of the pressure, freeze it since it hasn't been too long since she's calved and label it "Day 2 colostrum" or something like that. If you ever get into a bind in the future it's helpful to have it. After you do that I'd also let the calf latch onto those teats while she's in the head gate and see how she does.
Happy to hear they're all doing well. We're also going to be curious about the parentage!

Susan, it was very hard leaving them today. But, I had to leave them yesterday to take hay down to our daughter in Georga and they survived that so......... I'm kind of hoping for some of this bad weather so I can stay home (awful aren't I). Because I've been at my job for so long I carry over more than 200 hours leave time every year, so I don't think me being out a couple of days is too much of a deal. And my boss is super cool! I'm always telling him that if I can even lie up a snowflake I'm staying home .

Thanks, Hans, I will definitely do that. And yes, I will see if I can get the calf to latch on also. Yes, it'll be interesting to see if I made the right decision - probably not, but we'll see. And now that we've got this winter storm headed our way, I figure the other two will decide to do something.

Fran, when they are that small, they may only suck from one teat, or sometimes two, but seldom all four. It might take a week or more for her to use all teats. You can milk the unused ones (and save the colostrum in the freezer for another day), or wait it out. It won't hurt the udder, and eventually the calf will be big enough to nurse off all four. Don't fesh, looks like things are okay. cheers, c.

Oh gosh, thanks for that response! I got home from work today and Ellie had had her baby, another heifer. They are doing well. Got changed and went out to do chores and after I fed them, Bonnie decided to go into labor. I left her out there and went and took care of my horses and stuff . She's now had the baby and not wanting anything to do with it. This is her 4th baby, so what's the deal?

Okay, i can quit freaking now! All is well. Bonnie has decided that he is now worthy of her love and devotion....silly cow! Everyone is tucked in for the night, and hopefully Copper can/will keep the coyotes away.
Final tally: We had 2 heifers born on Saturday, and 1 heifer and 1 bull calf born today. Nothing else due here until Fall.
Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts and words! They were much appreciated! Hope someday I can return the favor.

Great news! Happy to hear they all turned out well and it happened before you're supposed to get the bad weather. It's not likely that you'll ever have all 4 that you're going to have on just two days again. The bull was very busy for a couple of days wasn't he?...lol

Yes, Hans, evidently he was. Their heats were not that close but who knows. Rosemary and her daughter calved on the same day, and Bonnie and her daughter calved on the same day. Weird - I guess I've got baby drama mamma's. The winter storm is here. When I say winter storm, I mean winter storm for us..... Haha. Right now it's only snow but they're saying ice for later today and tonight/tomorrow.

Fran, have you done the genotypes yet on the calves and moms? Just wondering how that all worked out.

I just got the results back late yesterday. Not all tests are complete. But both Jordan and Faith are A2/A2. I guess from these reports that I got them with the right momma's... What say all of you more experienced peeps? Edited to add: This is the test that I was supposed to do for this, right?

Looks good to me! Congrats on getting them right. One more good reason to have your cows genotyped!
