I've never kept it out for my cows, did keep it out for bottle goats, helped keep them from gassing up and dying. Guess it would work for a cow. P.J.

No, I don't offer baking soda and have never heard of doing that. The symptoms were inconsistent with acidosis. The calf had been weaned about a month ago, the amount of milk produced per day was less than 1 gallon, the amount of feed was 2 lbs alfalfa pellets, 2 lbs 12% cattle pellets and 1 lb of beet pulp, twice daily - unlikely to upset the rumen. Poop was totally normal, not runny like in case of acidosis. There was no lameness in feet - her pain was in her gut. Maxine is still symptom free.

Fingers crossed, Olga. Not a nice saga for anyone. You seem to have had your share lately. Not before time for good news. c.

Maybe just took a day for the magnet to work, glad she's holding steady.

It's sounding good Olga. Hopefully that is the last of her tummy pain. Did she dry up totally? Maybe she would have anyway even if she didn't have a tummy upset, just coincidental.

When I get a chance I will start a new thread for those who aren't familiar with acidosis, with a bit of an explanation and the thoughts behind free feeding Baking soda (carb soda, sodium bicarbonate) I don't want to hijack Olga's thread about Maxine.
edited as I mistakenly called Maxine, Marion. Sorry Olga!. Marion is one of my neighbour's pet cows that recently died, the cow that is, (she was almost 20) not the neighbour.

I can't remember who told me to keep out baking soda or why, but I always have. I keep it alongside the minerals and kelp and L.C. sometimes won't touch it for a week or two, then eat a cupful. Marsha
