I'm starting to believe that Dexter bulls that are not chondro-carriers may continue to grow until they are 9 or 10 years old. I read this and instantly thought: does this mean chondro-positive Dexters wont/or are less likely to continue growing in their height? If so, does this mean there are other effects of the gene's prescence than just the average reduction in bone growth?

Outofthebox,
I phrased that sentence the way that I did because my personal experience is limited to mature Dexter bulls that are chondro-free. I don't have firsthand knowledge of any registered chondro-carrier Dexter bulls that have been kept for 10+ years and properly measured annually, with height and weight measurements documented on them.

Patti, though we didn't annually weigh and measure Mike until he was collected at 9 years old, there was a visible difference in his height (and weight) between the time we acquired him at 4 years old.

Kansasdexters, I didn’t mean for it to sound sarcastic or that I was doubting you - I genuinely wanted to know. We have both chondro positive and negative bulls. Our herd’s average age is young. Our herd is now closed. We have a long term breeding plan which we will adjust as information comes to hand. This is why I asked the question. Lakeportfarms - thanks for the info on Mike. I would have liked to know what his height may have been around when he was four. Im looking at our 'little man' and wondering if he is at an average height for his age or is he smaller than he should be. *Fingers are crossed that he does a Mike and predominantly 'shares' his gene *

Sad that this whole thread makes no sense without Genebos original list of breed standard bulls which was deleted. I wish I had copied that. Did anyone make a copy they can share?

lonecowhand, believe it or not, I did actually copy that. When I copied Gene's post it automatically copied a link: dextercattle.proboards.com/user/15/recent?page=7#ixzz3BvwJLlmb The link is useless now; it takes you to a page that says "the user you are trying to access cannot be found." So there's no actual proof that this was the original list Gene posted, but for what it's worth--and to help make sense of the comments in this thread--here it is.

How Cool is that? Thanks Susan! I knew I should have hard copied it at the time. Too many good things get away by the next time I look for them online! Thanks again, Bill
