Maxine and Jasmine both calved on June 28. Jasmine and dun, horned bull calf. Jasmine and her 2 calves, the new one and Jupiter, who was born on August 29, 2013. Jupiter has been registered as a steer and will be attending, barring unforeseen circumstances, the MDBA meeting this fall. Maxine and black, horned bull calf. Frankly, I'm excited about these two guys! Step #1 is to see how they develop and if they show promise. Step #2 is to PHA test them.

They look good. I hope we'll be able to congratulate you soon on negative PHA results.

I was thinking about weighing them today, good idea! It won't be the birth weight, but it will be close.

I found my weighing equipment, enlisted the help of the boys, and went to the cow pasture. I called for the cows but there was no response - it was nearly noon and the herd had settled in for a nap in the shady hollow. Finally, Polly, Claire and Jupiter made their way to the barn. I locked them in the pen with some food and went down into the hollow. We saw Jasmine first - she knew I had food and so came to inquire about it. No calf by her side though, she left him with Maxine. Both babies were under Maxine's watchful eye and by th looks of it have made fast friends. Maxine ate from the bucket a bit, but her first priority is always the kids. So when she saw me trying to get a hold of one, she stopped eating. Jasmine took advantage and stuck her nose into the grain. Her little one let us put the sling on him and weigh him - just under 49 lbs. He looks a bit taller than the black calf - the one we didn't get to weigh, because cautious mama Maxine gave us the slip. While we were weighing the dun, Maxine took her calf away into the woods and none of us 3 saw where!

Both of your new calves are really lovely, they look to have Ernie's solid build and muscle already, especially Maxwell. I really like the look of their heads, they are looking like little bulls already, nice short and wide heads. Hope they both come back as negative for you. You will be on tenterhooks till you get your results. PS. Olga, what are the yellow flowers in your field? Are they a wildflower or a weed?

I had the same thought--that they have a nice masculine look. I especially like the second photo, looks like he's posing!

Ladena, lol, she did look grumpy! I brought my two kids with me, and the combination of Maxine being super cautious with the baby for the first couple of weeks, horses in the same pasture (we were coming home from a ride late on Friday and decided to drop them off at the closer pasture) and the presence of little humans all resulted in Maxine opting out of coming up to the barn. Thus everybody got a bite of alfalfa except her.
I too really like Maxwell's look, he is a thick calf. We'll wait and see how he grows...
Louise, that yellow flower is a weed. We sprayed the pasture last year, but not everywhere - too hilly. There is just not getting rid of it, it seems. It is called "bitter weed", nothing will eat it unless you cut it - when it dries, cows don't mind it at all.

Maxwell and Java are growing up. "Joined at the hip" "Maxwell unhappy that I interrupted his dinner" "Scenic view with Java" "Java striking a pose" "Maxwell and Java are nearly the same size, Java being a bit leggier"
