Olga, this little gets nicer as he grows...I just love his honey color...What a nice boy....Please keep the pictures coming, I would love to see how he grows out as I'm sure others are interested too...If I was looking for a dun bull, this is the one I would pick.....

The calf has definitely had a growth spurt in the last week. He was 98.7 lbs yesterday, at 30 days old - gaining 1.7 lbs per day in the last seven days. His average weight gain for the last 23 days was 1.5 lbs/day. Justus said it's the last time we're going to weigh him - he's getting too heavy to handle!

What a nice little plush toy. I'd like to give him to my granddaughter for Christmas! And he must be a sweetheart to let you catch him and weigh him. This might be a better question for Paula, but do you know where Belmont's dun comes from, sire or dam?

Dave, we just got Belmont (who does not carry red or dun). His first calves here aren't due till next fall. This dun bull calf is our late bull Earnie's last calf.

Patti, do you have any data on Dexter calf rate of gain? I've read some publications on Jersey calves, learning that they have the lowest % body fat at birth compared to other breeds and that they are expected to average 1.1 lbs daily gain and double birth weight by day 56. A dairy farmer long ago commented to me that newborn Dexter calves were much thicker and stronger than his dairy calves (he had Jersey and Brown Swiss) - after helping me to dehorn one.

Ahh, thanks Olga, Belmont looks like he has "adopted" the little guy in those pictures.

Have you tested him for PHA yet?

Nope, that's in the works. I've just finally sent off Java's and Maxwell's tailhairs too! I just can't believe how time flies, this baby is already 1 month old! And still no name! Help! Has to start with a C or Cl. Cyrus? Claymore? Clyde? Camembert?

He's so good-looking, how about Cary, as in Grant? If you like Irish names, Cavan is "grassy hill or hollow." Carney means "victorious." Carrick means "rock." Cleary means "minstrel or scholar." Clooney means "green plain or pasture" and may also mean "an intriguing rogue." There's another good-looking guy name! Colin means "little chieftain."

That's a great idea, Susan! There isn't another male Dexter in the registry with the name Cary. And since Grant originates from french for "big", he'll be IA Cary Le Grand. It will be a while before we know if he'll have a go at being a bull, especially based on PHA results. But I'd like for him to have a good name, just in case.

Look at those chunky legs! That's one sturdy little guy. I'm so crossing my fingers for his PHA results to be negative!

I really like this little bull calf, he has a great topline/tailset and tight sheath even at this age. He is masculine looking already, I like that in bull calves as it means that they will be masculine bulls when they grow up. Earnie certainly had nice calves, I hope you get a good PHA result on this one, he is a keeper.
