Sweep gate hinge

I am thinking of using a wood hinge post and solid wood gate for the crowding pen. You might need heavier hinges for larger breeds, but I think these hinges would be all you need for Dexters. I recently posted some pictures of a temporary sweep/crowding pen I set up with panels. dextercattle.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=gotopost&board=9&thread=4559&post=37870

The gate and one side of the pen appeared solid to them because I had covered them with tarps, so they didn't challenge the gate when I started closing it, they just calming moved toward the alley which looked like the only escape.

Dave, my set up right now is similar to yours, but I need to extend the alley and would like a better gate thus the research. Like yours mine works ok and I like a set up that doesn't take up a big area and is not a huge expense since I don't use it that often, and it's also complicated with me running sheep through it, fun discussion and great to see what others have.

I'm sure the tarps will work fine for the time being, but you might want to consider using something more ridged. Tarps can move or flap with the wind which sometimes can be unsettling to the animals.

Yes Barb, the corral panel and tarp setup was just a temporary fix to get my vaccinations done. I am going to build a small permanent working area this summer...no tarps!
