Building a family farm:
My son and his family (wife plus six kids) are scheduled to exit the US Army in a few months and would like to get into the farming and cattle business. I am retired Air Force and would like to invest in their future. I have read several of the excellent posts on this site and would appreciate all your wise counsel. The farm we are thinking of purchasing is located about 50 miles south of Atlanta in gently rolling hill country. It has approximately 250 acres, multiple pastures and 100 acres of woods. There is plenty of water and grass abounds. The land is currently leased by a cattleman and runs about 50 head year round.
Here's my challenge ...What's the best way to utilize this farm in order to maximize food production, both for our families and commercial sale of beef. We would like to diversify self-sustaining crops, fruit, and meat.
We'll also need to payoff a bank note so the farm has to make enough to pay expenses.

Welcome, bricks4kidz. If you create a new thread with a title about commercially raising Dexters, you'll probably get more answers. There are several people on this forum who do so and who might be able to help you.
