littlecowfl , how far are you from Nashville? It cost a whole lot less to get Siobhan done, and they did an additional procedure, plus kept her for a whole week and gave her antibiotics because her small size (relative to what they usually do caused some hemorrhage when they did the additional procedure. That was to ligate the two main arteries that supply the udder, an extra precaution in case any calves ever sucked on her, to give extra reassurance that she wouldn't start to lactate again. If you want a referral to the vet we used in Nashville, PM me. I'm leaving town on Sunday for a week and won't be checking my email notifications while I'm gone, but I can give you my phone number so you can text me. I really hope you find a solution for her! Thanks for tagging me, hoperefuge . For some reason, my email notifications don't always come through, but since you tagged me, I got it! By the way, Ebby and Royal are in the process of making us another beautiful calf for next year. Hoping for another heifer as sweet as Bunny! Ebby gave you a heifer?!?!? How did I miss this news?!?!? I got another call back from a different department. The first estimate was from the large animal (read: equine) department. The farm department called me back and said they could do it for $300. Much better! As long as they use pain control for her (I actually have a bottle of injectable Banamine on hand for use when she gets home). Thank you for your input, Zephyr, I read your blog before. Great story! Nashville is much too far. There are other vet colleges that are closer, but I think ours will do the job. Our cow's calf is still too young to wean. We'll need to schedule the spay in the fall.

littlecowfl, I'm so glad you got a better estimate! I think the bovine vets I've talked to are glad for patients to work on as opposed to the equine vets who are in such demand. hoperefuge, I haven't been on the forums really, and have been too busy to blog, so I haven't really shared the news much. We got a precious black heifer whom I named Royal Abundance, and we call her Bunny for short. Last year we had a 20" drought and we had a four year heifer-drought, so she really was Abundance and arrived in a spring of abundant rain!
