Ok, so my soon to be Momma is getting really big and wide really fast. She was bred mid August, and took (no cycles since and bull wants nothing to do with her) but she seams to be getting big. She is a short leg, but not dwarfy she is very proportionate. Could being a shorty have anything to do with it? This is my first Dexter calving experience but I don't remember my Herefords getting this big so fast. Nothing has changed in her diet. Could I just be a worried "mid-wife"? She isn't due till mid May, and I must say being prego has mellowed her out some.

That little calf is no bigger than a guinea pig right now (not even actually) so it's probably not the calf making her that big and fat already. She might be putting on weight for winter stores. Also, late summer/fall grass has different protein/carb properties than spring grass so her inputs have changed and her make up has changed. Her hair coat may be getting thicker now that it's cooling down - could that be giving the impression of getting bigger?

They sure do. We've been told it's called grass belly and not a problem, just well fed cows!
