Lice?

I've got 2 cows, 2 heifers, and 2 bull calves right now. They were all separated into pairs until this week. 2 or 3 of the cows are missing patches of hair, mostly around their necks, brisket, one on the tail head, and 1 on the side of her body. They seem to be rubbing alot on the barn and posts but I've been unable to see any lice. I've only found what I think is dead skin.... like dandruff. Any one have any ideas? should I wait for them to shed off and see how they do with their shorter coats?
Thanks.

Could very well be lice, the old timers always waited till the spring rains, said they washed away the lice. I usually get some insectacide powder and sprinkle it on their back. I wouldn't use it if you are milking the cow. I'm drawing a total blank (senior moment) on the name of the stuff I use, but any local feed store, or something like Atwoods, or Tractor Supply would know what to use. P.J.

If you have not wormed in a month or so go a head and do the spring worming with a pour on like Ivermectrin it will take care of lice, worms, mange and others. Or you could just wait for the summer sun it will take care of the problem. You most times see this type of problem during the cold wet months it will take care of itself when things dry out and we get some good hot sunshine

Lice?

I wormed with Basic H in the water tubs for 2.5 days and I've been putting alot more carbon material (straw, shredded paper, wood chips, etc.) in the bedding in the barn to keep the floor more dry and clean. Now I don't notice the cows scratching at all really and the dandruff that resulted is pretty much gone. So, I think it's all better!
The only health problem I'm watching now is my little steer has a spot on his back that is about the size of a silver dollar. It's white (or at least it was before I put iodine on it). It was white, hairless, and has really rough texture to it, like a scab almost. I'm just watching to see if it heals and falls off like a scab or if it changes or spreads.
