Just wondering how many people have tested for PHA? I have test one so far. My herd bull Muddflipper came back PHA free. What a relief. Waiting to do the blood test or hair sample when it becomes available.

I have tested most all of mine now and should have test results this week according to Agrigenomics. I drew blood and sent the samples in about 10 days ago. We will post the results on our web site for all our dexters.

So far, we have tested ten (10) of our AI bulls and sent a copy of our test results to the ADCA and to the PDCA for posting on their web site Online Pedigree. We are currently waiting on Pfizer Animal Genetics to get up and running on the PHA test, so that we can test the rest of our herd using tail hairs instead of drawing blood. To everyone that tests: Please send a copy of your test report to both the ADCA and the PDCA. This is very important information for all Dexter breeders to be made aware of; and IMO it should transcend any political or emotional ties. Patti - will the pdca accept the results if my dexters are not registered with them? I have 4 that are registered with both the adca and pdca. The rest are only just with the adca.

Hi Charles,
Yes, I believe that the PDCA will accept your test results for your registered animals, regardless of which registry they are in.
The reason for this is that the more PHA test results that we share between the two registries, the sooner we can both identify the "obligate" carriers in our individual registries and better assist our members in guiding the PHA testing efforts.

We got verbal test results on 8 dexters this morning. They are all pha free and details are available on our home page at www.beavertreefarm.comStill waiting on 2 more results, which I expect to be negative also. Will post those when available. Written reports will be sent to ADCA and PDCA when they come in. |

Is the PDCA sharing their information also?
I've not been to their website recently, but have heard that you have to be a member of the P's in order to see what animals have been tested for PHA. Thanks in advance.

Hi Barb,
It can't be left up to either the PDCA Registrar or the ADCA Registrar to "share" the test results that have been submitted to them by people that have tested. Those test results belong to the people that paid for the test and "own" the test result. Each registry merely posts what is submitted to it for that specific purpose, and neither registry ever "owns" the test results, therefore neither can issue copies of voluntarily submitted test reports to anyone else for other purposes.
It is truly up to the members of each Association to submit a copy of their PHA test results to both registries, in order to assure that this information is shared among the greatest number of Dexter owner/breeders. If everyone did this, both Associations would be able to post a more complete data set of the PHA test results.

We finally got all the results back in from Agrigenomics on the cows we tested. These have been sent to both the ADCA and PDCA. All of our cows came back PHA Free, or negative (great news!). I have a couple of others that have not been tested and we are using the new hair test from Igenity on them. The written reports took over 40 days to get from Agrigenomics and a lot of phone calls to them. charles www.beavertreefarm.com |

I have a quote for testing for PHA in Europe (55 Euros). Can I ask how much it costs in the US please?

Hi Clive,
AgriGenomics charges $25 USD per sample for a PHA test; and they routinely only test blood or semen samples. Tissue (ears) or tail hair samples can be tested by special arrangement/agreement (made in advance), but they take awhile longer to get a report.
Igenity charges $26 USD per sample for a PHA test; and they will test tail hair samples, blood, or semen.
We've been using AgriGenomics for testing semen samples and their sample turnaround time is about 3 weeks for a verbal (phone call) report and another 3 weeks to get the written report.
We sent our first five tail hair samples to Igenity last week for PHA testing, so can't comment yet on their turnaround time. They did acknowledge (by email) receiving the samples, and I thought that was a nice gesture.

As usual, everything is so expensive over here! Most of my herd goes for beef and any barren cows are culled, so I'm probably just going to test bulls otherwise I'll be bankrupt (I think that's Chapter 11 to you guys?).
