I understand peoples concerns. I know as Patti had mentioned:
"The ADCA has formally contacted Igenity and given them 30 days to contact all the affected sample submitters, review all their Dexter PHA reports, and remedy the situation".
The 30 day time period I think has come and gone. I would presume if you haven't been notified you're results are probably ok. I also had "heard" that there were only 4 or 5 herds affected.
Patti, could you please give us an update.

Hi PJ
The testing for PHA is voluntary, and even though the ADCA has new requirements for genotyping I really feel it is for the betterment of the breed. None the less it's still Mo Money, Mo Money, Mo Money. Everything nowadays is, isn't it?

Hi Barb and P.J.,
Anyone that has a concern about their Igenity PHA tests results can check their test report online at the Igenity website (www.igenity.com) . Since Igenity has changed its reporting format to show that both the Shorthorn-Maine Anjou PHA mutant variant and the Dexter PHA mutant variant have been tested and what the results are for each; if you look at your report online you should see the results for both tests. If your animal has tested PHA-free for both of the PHA mutant variants, then the animal is PHA-free, a non-carrier of PHA. If anyone still has questions about their results, they should contact Igenity immediately and ask for assistance.

Thanks Patti,
Just out of curiosity, does the Kerry breed carry any genetic defects?

Hi Barb,
The Kerry cattle that are in the United States today all descended from a small group (11 animals) that were imported from Ireland into Ontario, Canada. They are all closely related and because of decades of breeding within a close family group, any lethal recessive would have shown up by now -- but so far, so good. We breed father to daughter, half brother to half sister, mother to son and we still get very nice, healthy animals. Whatever genetic diseases or lethal genes that might have existed, have long since been culled out. What remains is a very pure breeding line that is pre-potent in its phenotypical traits. If you breed another cattle breed to a Kerry, the cross-bred offspring all look like a Kerry!

Patti - what is the status of Igenity being added back to the ADCA web site? Have they addressed the concerns of the Board that prompted them to be removed?

Hi Charles,
I believe that Igenity has addressed the issues brought to their attention by the ADCA. Currently, Igenity is the only lab that specifically reports the two PHA mutant variants individually on the same test report, confirming that both PHA mutations were tested for and what the results were for each. Igenity has the fastest turnaround time on samples and their test reports are accessible online at any time after the sample has been processed. If there is a problem with a report, they seem to be responsive in making corrections that are requested. Because of all these positive qualities, I will continue to use them for any of my PHA testing.
I don't know how soon the ADCA will put a link to Igenity back on the ADCA website. But the ADCA registrar does currently accept the Igenity test reports for PHA (for posting an animal's PHA status on the Online Pedigree). If enough ADCA members contacted their regional directors and requested that the link to Igenity be restored to the ADCA website, that might help get it put back on sooner rather than later.

The issue has been resolved and the link to Igenity has been restored to the ADCA website. Here is the link to the ADCA website's DNA testing page: www.dextercattle.org/testing_info.htmPatti

I complained to Igenity, that I hadn't recieved my updated test results, and they e-maile them to me. All my results were changed to reflect Dexter results, so I'm satisfied. My one carrier is still a carrier P.J.

I am glad to see the issue resolved regarding Igenity and back on the web site. Their web site is pretty easy to use and you can view and print your results on-line if you set up an account. We just submitted a couple of more samples to them.

Gene - same thing with me. Igenity emailed me the results on one today - great turnaround time and service, and a heck of a lot easier than drawing blood samples.
