S Kimo and Grover were sold together as weanlings to be raised for oxen. They were by the same bull out of Sioux and her daughter, so were 3/4 genetically identical - they were a perfect match. They were born 10 days apart and spent all their time together, except for nursing. Later on, Sioux started babysitting both calves while the younger Gusty would go off by herself. They would even nurse off Sioux together. Unfortunatelly, Grover stressed out after castration and despite all efforts, he died. S Kimo needed a new partner. Elmo was 4 months younger, out of Erin, but by the same bull - still a close match. So he went to the Bradfords. Unfortunatelly, Elmo hurt his back leg sometime last year and has since been lame when mooving faster than a slow walk. So, the Bradfords and S Kimo had to accept the reality - this ox was going to work single. And he does it well. His owner is very happy with him and is impressed with his work ethic. S Kimo, who goes by "Booger" these days, will come up to the open door of his stall and give his head to be haltered and doesn't try to push his way out; all of the wood used to heat the house in the winter has been brought up on a wagon pulled by Booger; Booger has gone to a few Heritage days in Arkansas to show off his skills; in the summer grandkids climb on Boogers back and ride around in the pasture. The Bradfords like Booger's slow and steady attitude - afterall, Jerry is in his 80's and wouldn't have been able to keep up.

It started to sleat, then to snow during our visit. As soon as it turned back to rain, I skidaddled out of there. We had another hour to go on the interstate and I didn't want to chance it getting slick. As soon as gets a bit warmer and sunnier, I'll drive back for a demonstration. I've been dying to see Booger work too.

I'd love to train one to pull one of these days. I would also like to see pictures of Booger working. Nice looking animal!
