Matt, your best bet is to look at Dexters on farms that do milk their cattle. I'm sure there are good milkers in many bloodlines, but it takes a bit of selection. It's just as important that the cow can sustain a lactation, as is an impressive first flush. I'm keeping the fridge full of milk, cream and soft cheese on a once-a-day milking of a first freshener, who's calf was sold in mid-November. She is a Hiyu Renown Magician daughter, of a Riverhill Saturn's Galaxy daughter. You might want to go back and check your history Genebo, about the experimental registry..marion

Hi Matt. Lucifer, a red bull, is very good for milk yield and good udder shape and attachment. If rare breeds obsession with 'purity' is your bag, don't use him as he has outcrossing eight generations back, and you could have 1/1024th other breed genes in there (keeping in mind that all but about 10 genes are common among all breeds of cattle). Lucifer was a tall bull, non-dwarf, and there are some temperament issues reported. Pick through the offspring, keeping those with traits you like, and eat the rest. Saturn of Knotting, black, an uncle, does not show outcrossing, and was imo probably one of the best Dexter bulls anywhere, anytime. He is the sire of Riverhill Saturn's Galaxy, black, and Galaxy improved pretty well everything he touched. Great milk, great udders, good muscle, small stature, non-dwarf. Cornahir Outlaw was picked as an old pure line and red to provide an alternate to Lucifer if breeding for color. He was not picked for milk production, although his offspring don't do badly in that department. Slightly taller, non dwarf. Hiyu Renown Magician comes from a Galaxy son and a very old US/English line cow that produced 4 gallons/day. He gives beautiful udders and good milk yield to his daughters. Avg height for a non-d, black. I've heard that Hiyu Salty Rambler IV also did good things for udders. I would think the milk yield would be average. Black but carries both red and dun, non-dwarf. None are carriers of pha. Most of the Woodmagic cows gave a reasonable amount of milk but attachment was't always the greatest, and they often had very hairy udders. Outside those lines, you'll have to check out both the dam and the sire's dam, to see what the animal had available to inherit. I'm afraid Gene is twice confused. ..the English Experimental registry was set up in an attempt to eliminate dwarfism, and had nothing to do with milk production. Outlaw does not relate to the Exp registry. I have a bull here who has the traits you are looking for, but he also comes sickle hocked. No pha tho'. ;D c.
