Hi all, Any of you use the old soldered Surge buckets? I can't believe that the short time milk would be in the bucket it would be a problem. Many water line still have lead solder. I'm an old plumber, used to use lead solder all the time, when the lead issue came about, experts said all you had to do was let the water run couple seconds before you consumed any. Big problem was too much solder used and ran past the joints, plus long contact time. Any info or references would be great! Thanks

Hi, There is a food-grade epoxy paint used by beekeepers to cover the solder joints on honey extractors. I would not use the milker pail with uncovered lead solder. My rule when it comes to food safety is: if you think it's iffy, dont use it! So, don't rationalize the 'safety' of old solder..marion www.indianamaplesyrup.org/paint.html

I agree with marion, I wouldn't use anything with lead solder for food. Surge buckets are not that uncommon so it ought to be fairly easy to pick one up.
