I have a 5 year old Dexter cow with a 2 month old calf at side. Usually she has quite a full udder and you can tell the calf likes to nurse the front quarters, but yesterday her udder was half the size it usually is and she has a swollen area in front of her udder on her left side. Could the milk be stuck before getting to the udder? Both cow and calf are otherwise acting normal.

Will she let you handle her/feel her udder? I would be concerned about mastitis in the swollen area. If you can, check her udder to see if it's hard and/or hot. If at all possible, see if you can squeeze some milk out. It should be white, if it's clear, yellow/watery, or chunks come out, then you most likely have mastitis. Also, if you can check her temp. Shoud be about 102, if it's much higher that's a sign of infection.

I would not worry about the lack of milk the calf is probably taking it. Can you post a picture of the swelling.

Her udder is not swollen or hot, the only area effected was the area to the left of her naval and back to just in front of her udder. The swelling is starting to subside and her calf is still suckling fine. Not sure what the problem was. Just relieved they are both doing well. I have pictures of what it looked like but can't figure out how to get them on here.
