Hello,
We are looking for a home meat grinder. We would like one that will last long and be powerful enough for 60-80 pounds of meat at a time. Not looking for a packing house size unit but not a kitchen type designed to make a couple patties from a roast either.
We will not be grinding a whole steer at one time, but a couple deer and a few goats each year. We would also do some beef and pork from time to time.
Do you have any suggestions as to what brand? And we would appreciate hearing any views on the size that would handle the 60-80 pounds of meat in one setting.
Thank you

Thank you Mr. Genebo
I will check Sears. Yours is most likely made in USA and still running after 40 years??!!
I did find a Hobart that is a smaller commercial unit, but it was a 5 horse electric motor that needed a small power plant to start and run.

For what you are describing a 3/4 HP or bigger grinder will be more than adequate. We have 2 grinders, a 3/4 and a 5 hp commercial unit. I can not tell you the last time we used the big grinder. We process about 6 pigs, 1 beef, 20 - 30 deer, per year and have never had a problem. The 3/4 hp grinder also takes up much less space, it stores in a tote. Make sure you get several grinding plates as the size of the grind matters.......

Thank you for the reply.
One of the best sites I have read so far is the review section at Bass Pro. The unit i was drawn to is the LEM 3/4 hp. The users there say that it is enough that most would never need more size unless doing a whole beef.
Your post confirms this and I appreciate your input. I would love a hugh unit that was overkill in size until I need to move it or find a spot to put it in. The 3/4 hp size is just right and I can carry it around if need be.
Thank you.

In case others are thinking about processing meat themselves I will follow up. We have been using the LEM 3/4 for a short while. It is fast enough that you won't be waiting for it. It can handle larger size pieces without bogging down. I called LEM and asked several questions about the various sizes of machines. The 3/4 is a large medium sized unit and they said it could run for several hours straight without any worries at all.
For a home unit with people that probably won't do more than a couple goats or a couple deer at any one time this is a good machine. It does make a little noise but it is a meat grinder.

I was told by a co worker that Academy had one for $50 during black Friday. Wish I would have gone in. Might want to check in your area.
