What method have you found is the best way to "Market" or sell any steers for sale? The traditional newspaper ads, craigslist, word of mouth (if so how do you get the word out), and so on. Just a newbie looking for a little help for when the time comes...maybe I can have my homework done when the time comes...lol Thanks for your input.

Your best bet is to take advantage of the contacts you already have and put the word out about what you are raising and the benefits of naturally raised beef. Unless you live where everybody else is doing it, you'll find interest that will grow as your farm grows. For example, my wife is a teacher and she has a waiting list of co-workers, who then talk about it with others. Dexters are great for individual buyers because it doesn't overwhelm them with more than they can fit in a freezer, yet they know they are getting the whole (or 1/2) of the animal.

It all depends on how much time and effort you want to put into it. For about 10 years we sold "Dangus" beef to a local processor for a premium price so he could rebrand it under his name and sell to high end restaurants in the metro areas. He is a USDA inspected processor as well as a wholesale supplier. It worked well, he got a reliable product we got a good check. Due to the curve balls that life throws at us we now do it different, we sell wholes and halves by hanging weight that is done by a state inspected processor, we deliver, they specify what they want, works well, this is mostly word mouth AND many of our customers got here by offering eggs for sale, they are cheap and it brings people here and we have found once they start eating fresher foods they tend to want to move up, we also offer BBQ pigs and lambs. Another option that we do not use, but our neighbor does, is to establish relationships with some "local owned" stores, health food stores and cetain farmer markets....Have your beef USDA slaughtered, label it properly and sell it through those outlets, the stores keep a commision but the prices he gets are very very very good, but much more work and expense....
