Ok, so a friend and I are really interested in promoting (we do all the time!) and showing our dexters. Our local shows do not have Dexter classes, there have been a few oxen here and there but no Dexters in the breed pens. How would we go about starting this? Something we are interested in doing within the year or so....any ideas would be great. Obviously, we would contact the fair assoc. and ask them, see what we need to do but as far as for a recognized dexter show? We have quiet a few breeders here in NH, and we feel this may be a big hit. ANY info would be great. Thanks in advance!

The biggest item is to have the Fair approve and establish a Dexter Show. Then, you will need to establish the rules/classes for the show (you can just copy/use these from an already existing show). Your ADCA Regional Director is also a source of help and you should contact them. If you plan to pay show premiums you might need to get some sponsors - the financial end is often determined by the Fair. It is common for the Fair to want a minimum number of animals to have a breed show also.

At our fair in Webster County, Mo. we had enough entries that we were broke off into Dexter classes. We have a lot of youth in the MDBA that show. If you are an adult that resides in the county you are allowed to show. I think this is a way to start...have enough entries to show. This year the MDBA show will also be at the Webster County show grounds-we outgrew the other place!!! We will put info on the MDBA website. Rhonda

between just my friend and I, we will have 15 (or so) cows/heifers/steers to exhibit. I know for a fact we could get several more there.....just to get someone to show them. The local 4-H kids (beef) expressed interest. I feel like we are in way over our heads, but we really want to do this. Are we crazy? Don't answer that. LOL. I guess first order of business in to get in touch with the fair association like Charles said, then go from there. Great ideas, keep em coming! Thanks for your input!

The ADCA will help you any way we can to establish a Dexter show - contact your Regional Director for any assistance needed.

Would be great to have someone in our Region showing. I've never shown but been to a few of them and am here to help in whatever way I can. I have a banner I could send you to use at the show. You may also want to contact the show committee and see if they have any suggestions. You will certainly want to make sure all your cows are halter trained well and used to being tied. Are there any classes you could enter into if you don't have a breed class? That way if you get a good turn out the fair may be more interested in giving you your own breed class? Lots of things to learn before you show, grooming, clipping presentation etc etc.

thankfully, between my friend and I......we FIRMLY believe all our cattle should be halter/lead trained, tied, groomed and handled regular. It makes them a "better member of society" and more useful (in our opinion). The grooming/clipping will be new, and that is where we will need the kids help. I have the grooming standards for Dexters, so obviously we would follow that. Um....lets see.....Yeah, I guess we could enter in other classes, I should look into that. Ok, I guess I need to get my but in gear and contact the fair assoc. There is one State fair and one HUGE fair that has a large agricultural/animal aspect, so those would be the two we are aiming for. Thanks Carol, I will be contacting either you or whoever takes over from you about this.

You may want to think about starting out small..Is there a 4H livestock show?, we started a dexter class in our local one and the 4H leadreship is usually very receptive to adding new classes. If they won't add a class you can always show in the open classses, just read the rules some are mandatory sale clases.... Showing and exhibiting are 2 completely different things, we prefer to exhibit as there is much more opportunity ti interact with the public to educate about the breeds you have. We exhibit at several local fairs and the Dexters are always a big hit. Have handouts available for people to take, people love free stuff. My biggest pet peeve when either showing or exibiting is the owner who freaks out when someone touches thier animal, realize you are going to a public event and many people do not know how to act around livestock but rather than get mad educate educate educate.....Good Luck and remember to stop and smell the roses along the road...
