catz, I hope this is a fair reply...
PRO HORNS
some people just plain like the looks of them
horns can make handy handles when working cattle
the original breed description says horns so we can't change
horns dissipate heat, a bonus in the summer
horns are useful to protect against coyotes and other varmints
PRO POLLED
eliminates horn injuries to other cattle--and people
cuts down on bullying in the herd
don't have horn heat loss during winter, cheaper on feeding
fit more cattle into a feeder so less space and equipment needed, and cuts down on fencing repairs
some people think it's safer, especially around little kids
IN GENERAL if you only have a few animals and/or treat them like pets, horns are less likely to be a problem. If you have a larger herd and/or treat them like livestock, horns can be a nuisance.
This topic has been set here where one cannot post a direct reply specifically because in the past a lot of damage was done to breeders and bloodlines by how those with strong anti-polled opinions dealt with the issue. Specific people and animals were attacked with extreme language which created a very negative, indeed poisonous, atmosphere.
ALL Dexter breed associations around the world accept polled Dexters, and treat them as equal in all ways to horned. Keeping one type or the other is a matter of personal choice.
cheers, c.
