Each thread is locked, so one has to start a new thread:
England used four generations to pure, not five. They were called Appendix A, B, C, and then registered as purebred, not Grade 5, 4, etc.
Polled was available in Ireland, but was not one of the founding traits of Dexters.
Yes, there would have been polled small dwarf black or red cattle with legs short between the knee and fetlock that would have qualified for inclusion in the new Dexter herd book. However, since one of the selection traits was horns (of any shape, by the way), they were not included in those selected to become 'Dexters'. So, they existed, but weren't used.
"The craze for polled in North America' was not what caused a few polled lines to be developed in England. Angus, along with Jersey, were the two most popular breeds to cross with a Dexter and there were hundreds of them. Maybe we should be criticizing any Dexter that exhibits Jersey-like horns?
Since Platinum came from a horned/polled mating, he had to be hetero, and Fred was well aware of this before he collected semen from the bull.
None of this is earth shaking or really critical to understanding, but you might as well get the proper info, as have it not quite right.
cheers, c.
